A question about this place:
What is the best hiking route for first-time visitors? We are experienced campers (Boundary Waters) but not so much hikers. We plan to spend 4-5 nights on the island. We are open to where we would start and end.

Contact the ranger station. Campsites are reserved at the beginning of your trip. When we went, it was possible to take a ferry to one end of the island and trek to the other end where another ferry would take you back to the mainland. We stayed only one night on a little bay on the north west sided that looked across to Thunder Bay Ontario. It was somewhat isolated from the other campsites. Prevailing westerlies blowing over lake Superior means it will be cold on this side of the island at night. Because it was a penisula we had great seats for the Norther Light display.

Nearby we found a great deal of firewood due to a windstorm that had knocked down a large number of trees. Also met up with a real live “Bulwinkle” who took one look at me and then gracefully leapt over the fallen trees to disappear into the brush. (Don’t try this after August 15 when the moose go into rut.) Also nearby found a site were wolves had killed a moose. All that was left was a skull and some antlers.

Interior of the island has a small lake and abandoned mining operation. The ferry to south end of the island is bigger than the ferry that serviced the norther end. Reservations are a good idea.
