A question about this place:
What pueblo would people recommend for a quick day trip (preferrable around Alb. or Santa Fe) that is not too touristy or "fake"?

I guess that depends where you’re comming from – - I went to Acoma about 10 years ago and that was about an hour away from Albuq. It was somewhat touristy at the end… you finish the tour in an area where there are vendors of all manner of Native American crafted items… I went with a group and enjoyed it.

There are tons of Pueblos in between Albuquerque and Santa Fe. You can easily visit several in one day – and that’s what I would suggest doing. Then you really get to see what different ones are like and get a better idea. I went Pueblo hopping myself one day when I was living there, now I’m trying to remember which ones I went to…I went to Zia, then went back to 25 and headed north and stopped at 2 others, now I can’t remember which ones… I remember Zia is pretty cool though. If I remember correctly, they have one of the round ceremonial houses and also some hornos, the adobe ovens. It’s kind of up on a hill so it looks pretty, and there wasn’t one tourist there (except me). I took my husband back there once and he really liked it, too, and again, no other tourists.

I’d suggest getting a good map, heading over to Zia, then coming back to 25 and stopping at a couple more on the way north.

Ah Zia sounds great. Could you tell me any recommendations like is there a fee to enter, should photographs not be taken, do you need or recommend having a tour guide, etc…??? Thanks!

There’s no fee, at least that I know of…I just drove right in, parked somewhere inconspicuous, and walked around. I met a nice woman and two little girls and they didn’t seem to mind that I was there, they just seemed curious why I would come there to their little pueblo, and asked me where I was from and stuff. I don’t know about photos…at that time I really hated taking photos so I didn’t take any, I kind of have the feeling like it would be awkward though. But maybe that’s just because I don’t like looking like a tourist ;) . I don’t think it would be a good idea to take picts of houses and things, unless there happens to be someone friendly-looking standing there and you could ask them. As far as a tour guide, I suppose you could get one. I just walked around by myself, and I think you’d probably get a better feel for it without a guide. Just enjoy the peaceful beauty.

I also have enjoyed going out to Laguna/Acoma. I also like to drive out to Jemez which is within an hour of Albuquerque to get some fry bread and check out the pueblo crafts.

In terms of going into the pueblos, sometimes they are closed to outside visitors and some don’t allow photography. You’ll want to do a little research before heading out.

I also recommend you research the feast days or celebrations. During the feast days, even “closed” pueblos have dances and you might get invited over for dinner.

Here’s a calendar of the feast days:

Also, if you’re in Albuquerque in April, there is a huge pow wow (over 500 tribes) called the Gathering of Nations.

definitely santo domingo – it’s right between sf and albuquerque – it’s one of (if not THE) most traditional of the pueblos. and one of my best friends is from there =)
