Vaccinations:
Hep A (you may already have this)
Hep B
Rabies (if you feel like you need it)
Typhoid (only if you’ll be in a tropical climate)
Japanese encephalitis (not something I’ve heard of before, and have never received)
You’ll probably want to get a tetanus booster.
All I ever got on my multiple trips to China was Hep B vaccinations. Fortunately I had a tetanus shot stateside and thus didn’t need one when I gashed my leg on some rusty fence out there. Not that such a thing would ever happen to you, of course. ;)

Hm…nevermind, I’m just crazy. A quick look at my medical history revealed that I got hep A and B my first trip out there.
Just confusing it with something else, I guess.

Check the US State Department’s site before you go. Hep A and B are always a good idea as is tetnus but if you are going to big cities, thats really all you need. A flu shot wouldn’t hurt as flu basically begins in China, but in ten trips I’ve never had a flu shot and never caught the flu. I will say, however, that I nearly always get some kind of a light upper repiratory infection…it just seems to go with the territory, especially in Beijing where the air can be rally bad.

Ummm, I don’t know if Australia makes you get any vaccinations. They RECOMMEND various vaccinations (Hepatitis, Malaria for certain areas, etc), but none are required by China.
I came here. I haven’t had a shot in my life, no one asked me for anything, and I’ve been here nearly four months, and going to be here a lot longer.
Check with your own government. Usually they post that information on related government websites.
Since Australia is a country without widespread diseases, I doubt you will be required to get anything. Some people get shots because they think it’s a good idea—I, however, am not one of those people.
Good luck.

I agree with the Hep A/Hep B vaccination recommendation. The other recommendations really depend on where you are going. Two recommendations:
(1) check the WHO site for any health recommendations for China.
(2) Here in the U.S. we have public health centers that give immunizations for international travel on certain days of the month. Check with your local government to see if you have something similar. They may make other recommendations depending on where you’re going. I know that some of the southern provinces, they recommend Malaria vaccination if you are planning to go into the countryside. I know Yunnan is one of those, but not sure of all the details of the recommendations.

Go to: http://wwwn.cdc.gov/travel/default.aspx
that will give you all the info you need. Or talk to your doctor. I didn’t need anything for Hong Kong, but a couple friends needed malaria pills when they went to Hainan Island. so it really depends on where you are going (i.e. tropical, mountainous, developed cities…)

I don’t think they require any. When I went I got hep b, typhoid, and malaria. but check with your doctor or a travel clinic.
