A question about this place:
Our Mexico adventure will, of course include tequila tastings. Any recommended brands we should try? Gracias.

Mi favorites:
- Don Julio Reposado
- Maestro Tequilero (Añejo o Reposado)
- Tradicional (with frozen bottle is best)
- 7 Leguas (recommended by a friend).

Tip, check in the bottle that it is 100% Agave.

Good list. The brands are all new to me, so when we’re at a bar (how do you say “bar” in Spanish?) I’ll know what to ask for.

Bar is the same in spanish, but there is another place to drink in Mexico it’s called “Cantina” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cantina) ...

So does this mean you are going to Guadalajara? my home!!!?? You’ll love it!

Anyway, I would recommend Tequila Herradura, and if you can, take the Tequila Express, a train with live traditional mariachi music, lots of Tequila and good Mexican food!

I almost wish we were going to Guadalajara, your response was so enthusiastic!

If we were to go – and who knows, maybe next trip we will – can I ask you what things we would enjoy about a vacation there? We love people, authentic food, experiences, and places.

In fact, your response reminds me of a trip to San Diego last year where, on the recommendation of a 43Places friend, we ate at Candelas, a wonderful Mexican restaurant. It has become one of our all time favourite restaurants and they served a dessert that I rank number one on my list. According to the manager, the chef’s grandmother made this “comfort-food” crepe dessert from sheep’s milk, carmelized sugar and crushed walnuts. Superb! Apparantly she was from one of the mexican provinces, but I don’t recall which one. Have you ever heard of this dish?

Gracias for your tequila recommendation. It’s on the list to try.

Never mind, I just read your previous entries and questions…

I still suggest Tequila Herradura. It’s very traditional and always good quality. It’s the one my family has been drinking for years…

Well, if your family has enjoyed this over the years, it must be noteworthy. Can’t wait to try it, and when we do, we’ll propose a toast to your family’s health.

I just did a little research on tequila and discovered the Guadalajara is one of the tequila regions. Now I’m positive your family knows an excellent choice!

I’ve heard Patron is one of the best. Don’t know where you’re going, but here’s a link:

Thanks!

This is actually one of the brands that I was just recently introduced to while on a trip to California. My wife and I were in Monterrey having a drink at the farthest restaurant on the pier, when another person sitting at the bar overheard my wife ask the bartender for a recommended drink. He suggested the Silver Patron, along with an interesting story. It certainly lived up to his billing.

We ended up buying a bottle and bringing it home. In fact, this would be a very good time for a sip.

Looking forward to trying one of the other ones of the same marque while in mexico. I understand there is a gold label one.

Just checked the site. Awesome bottle!

I wonder if the flavour is as complex as the label.

Do you know what to look for in a tequila? I know Scotches, beers and wines, but not much about this. Is there a nose? Something to look for in the colour? the flavour?

Gracias.

Hey travelinFrank: I had the Reposado Azulejos and it was great! I just got back from Mexico City a week ago [ Im there every 6 months for family/friends ] and was looking for it, but its not as widely available as before. Im not sure they will have it out in the Yucatan area where you will be, but if you are flying through a major airport, ask in the Duty Free.

Tequila basically breaks down as listed here: http://www.itequila.org/

And its personal taste. I usually get a reposado or añejo, but there are certain marks like Centenario that I enjoy the blanco as well.

For me, the way to drink tequila is like your Scotch. “Shooting” it is for college kids. Its sipped slow and savored and sometimes you can get a small glass of sangrita [ vaguely like Mrs. T’s on the side ] but never ever with lime and/or salt. NEAT and in a copita, which is a bit larger than the US shot glass size. Of course, thats just me .. experiment and have fun! :)

Thanks for the excellent link! It gives me a good background to study. Right on about about neat, slow and savoured.

Looking forward to the experimentation. We’ll try the Reposado Azulejos, and when we do, we’ll raise a toast to your help

Cheers.

I will second the Don Julio, although somewhat more costly than other brands, it is definitely worth it.

I like it when someone seconds a suggestion. Puts it at the top of the “must try” list.

there are so many tequilas. I think someone said it earlier – stick with agave, and sip it…like a nice brandy. the good stuff doesnt have that raw bite and doesnt need a beer chaser.

TravelinFrank
Dundas

You’re so right. We’ll stick to the “good stuff”. Anything requiring a beer chaser is already several years and too many experiences behind us. We’re far too old to be wanting to wobblywalk or wake up with blistering headshakes again.

As with a brandy, or a good scotch, the intent is just to discover, sip and savour the smoothness. Perhaps have two or three parallel tastings to compare flavours, but’s all we can handle at a time!

As a fan of tequila, I have found that the general rule for good tequila is this; the clearer the tequila, the better the tequila. Less headaches, smoother taste. Patron is something you can try at any bar. If you are in Mexico I would recommend the following; Tres Mujeres, Herradura, and I am a big fan of Tres Generaciones Plata.

Hola,

Good tip! Gracias. I’ll add your recommendations to my growing list.

I second most of what is said here. There’s alzo Cazadores which is very good. And if you like dessert ports and Brandy, try a small cup of a tequila liqueur called “Agavero”. It’s made like a port except using agave, so it’s on the sweet+strong side.

TravelinFrank

Buenas tardes,

I definately like port, so the Agavero’s a great suggestion.

When i was in mexico we took a tour. At the end we spent the 2 hour trip back to our hotel drinking tequilla, i couldn’t tell you what brand it was, but whatever they put in your hand, just drink it.

TravelinFrank

Buenos dias,

A little bit of research on the site suggested above by T. Klumpp: http://www.itequila.org/indicates there are more than 600 brands of tequila! Far too an ambitious plan for our first one week trip. I understand the resort has a tequila bar and I’m sure the bartender will help us with recommendations.
