Christmas is a great time in Munich! There is the Christmas Market in the center of town but don’t drive there, walk or take public transportation. While you are in the center of town, there are a number of churches, museums and restaurants. So, it is a great all day (into the night) trip. There is Maxamillian Strasse, whith museums (art museum) and tons of wealthy shops for good people watching and a taste of the high life. If it is cold, go to the Deutsche (German) museum, it is huge so pick what you want to see or you will be there for days. I agree Oberammergau is worth a drive.
Have a great trip!

There’s a Christmas market – I’ve never been to it, but I’ve been to other Christmas markets and they were good so you might want to check it out.

There’s a potato museum which is a bit random and admittedly isn’t the most interesting thing to go to, but at least you can say you’ve been to a potato museum :-)

Can you take me in your suitcase?? I really want to go back!

oOoOoOh potato museum!! what’s in it?!! like, sculpted potatoes? moldy potatoes? :0

sure i’ll take you. make your way over to seattle. somehow that seems like it wouldn’t be all that efficient though…

Yeah… It does seem like it would be easier for me to just go to Munich…

The potato museum had some paintings of potato things… Like people farming, or abstract potato art or whatever, there was a room about Pfanni – a German brand of potato things like dumplings and mash, eeeerm there were some strange models of potato people (which were really cute!) and information about the history of potatoes and different potato types. It was funny. Also, Pfanni sounds a bit dodgy :P but my German friends didn’t understand what me and my English friend were laughing at =) There’s also a little souvenir thingy where one of my German friends bought me a teeny book on potatoes which has a story about when someone went to a restaurant and ate some Gnocci… It was fun =). The whole holiday was fun actually. I want to move to Munich after Uni

You have to go to Neuschwanstein if at all possible. It is a bit of a drive (about 90 minutes), but totally worth it.

Munchen’s Fussgangerzone (walking district) is very cool too. Lots of shops and ice cream.
You can also hit the beer hall and a lot of outdoor cafes.

The Christmas markets are a must and are unavoidable. The glühwein is great – it’s a hot mulled wine. Each little area of the city has a christmas market – so check as many of them out as you can… they are unique and have great arts and ornaments.

Neuschwanstein is quite a site and I imagine seeing it with snow is great.

I’d suggest a day trip to Salzburg. It’s such a romantic little city tucked into the mountains, and the best time to visit is winter.

There are many interesting museums (yes, like the potato museum, or the children’s toy museum) I’ve only been to the art museums and highly suggest the Neue Pinokotek.

Cars aren’t necessary and I believe would be more of a nusance – you can get to the castle or Salzburg as of now on a partner ticket that is good for up to 5 people and costs 27 euros, so that’s really affordable.
