Have a dinner at the “Salt Lick” way south of town. It is definitely worth the 20 mile drive through no-where. It is not air conditioned, and it’s BYOB, so bring a beer if you’d like to have one. Simple food, simple setting, great sense of what early Austin and the area was like.

SKIP SKIP SKIP “the Oasis” on Lake Travis unless you just get ONE drink at sunset and then leave.

Try the fried pickles at one of the restaurants.

Austin sucks, don’t move here!

Hi. Lots of great advice here so far, I’ll just add a couple of restaurants that my wife and I really loved:

Hudson’s on the Bend – very nice, probably the most upscale restaurant in Austin, a bit of a drive outside Austin, but definitely worth it.

BBQ places: Rudy’s, Ironworks (in downtown), Salt Lick (a bit of a drive again).

Hope you enjoy Austin.

Sunset at Mount Bonnell; music shopping at Waterloo Records; sushi or Japanese lunch at Musashino’s; grab a bite anytime at Coco’s Cafe; movies at Dobie Mall; BBQ at Salt Lick; late night meal at Kirby Lane; hiking in Zilker Park…so many, so many things to do in so little time. Just enjoy it, you will love Austin! Please bring lots of money. You’re gonna need it.

Definatly go to the Botanical Gardens at Zilker Park. The most beautiful place in Texas.

it all really depends on you tastes austin as something for every one.If you like live blues music go to antones also before you come check out whats in that weeks chronicle http://www.austinchronicle.com/gyrobase/
they have every thing thats going on around town listed there from live music events to parades and festivals. For food try Baby Acapulcos and if you aren’t driveing have a purple margarita while you’re there. Zilker is must as almost every one here has said. Its a very large and beautifull park.

+ BBQ out-of-town – Salt Lick
+ Mexican Martinis – Trudy’s on 30th (college hangout), also Spider House coffee up the street
+ Tex Mex – Hula Hut on Lake Austin
+ Mozart’s Coffee (next door to Hula Hut)
+ Tex Mex – Chuy’s on Barton Springs (Elvis and hubcaps for decor)
+ Whole Foods on 6th Street (biggest/coolest grocery store ever)
+ The Domain, Mopac(Hwy 1) and Braker/Duval (high-end shopping if you are into that)
+ 4th street (warehouse district)
+ 6th street (bars, bars, bars!), preferably on a Fri. or Sat. to get the full effect ;-)
+ South Congress (SoCo) – tons of funky shops and restaurants
+ Town Lake Hike and Bike Trail – walk it, jog it, grab a canoe, 10+ miles of trails
+A few neighborhoods to check out: Travis Heights, Hyde Park, and Clarksville – spendy!
+ Alamo Drafthouse for beer+food while you catch a flick (fried pickles available :) ) – Alamo @ The Ritz on 6th just “re-opened” recently

I’m sure I’m forgetting tons of stuff, but it’s a really great town.
