Veggie food? It’s got to be Padmanadi on 97th Street and about 106th Ave. It’s brilliant. Vegetarian Indonesian food, delicious, reasonable, extremely amicable staff. You’ll love it. One of the owners, Thomas, was maddeningly deported to Indonesia earlier this year on some stupid document he filled out wrong, but it’s still being run by his partner, Kassim and if there’s any decency in this world Thomas will be back.
For everything else, I think you’ll find Whyte Ave and the rest of Strathcona to be your neighbourhood of choice. Besides the decent and veg but little bit pricey Cafe Mosaics on Whyte and about 109th Ave, you will almost certainly have an unnatural amount of affection for the sweet potato fries and other Cajun delights at Da-De-O a few blocks east. The whole neighbourhood is the most walkable part of town in Edmonton, and if you’re looking for some theatre that night check out what’s going on at the Varscona down by 83 Ave and 103 St. It’s right across from the Old Strathcona Farmer’s Market, open Saturday mornings til 3, if you’re looking for some green onion cakes or fresh veggies. Conveniently, all this is quite close to Megatunes, Blackbyrd Myoozik and second-hand store Southside Sound, a few of the finest indie music stores in town, and all on Whyte Ave. Enjoy!
