Yes, we’ll be in Rockford for the SYmposium Sept 26 to 30th. I’m sure there’ll be time to both explore the city a little and have one or two nights for dinner.

Frank – Rockford is not the most exciting place but it’s my hometown so of course I have a heart for it. I would say try some of the places on State St. toward downtown river district area like Brio, CRU, Zambuca, Paragon, Irish Rose. What area of town are you staying in?

We’re staying at the the Clock Tower Resort and Conference Center – I don’t know what area that’s in.
Although we’ve not been to Rockford before, we have been following its progress through the America in Bloom program. Efforts in evironmental improvement, clean-up, use of plants and volunteerism are excellent according to the judges who visited the City. Judging from your link – thanks – the restaurants in the River District look interesting. It sounds like Rockford is a very “livable” place, and we’re looking forward to visiting it.

Clock Tower is far out on East State St. but if you head to downtown you will find all of those places. My family is still in Rockford and they love living there. It is very clean and they call it the Forest City. I would check out the bike path along the Rock River and Sinisippi Park as well. If you are staying out there I would also check out Alverez – great Mexican food out by the Cherryvale Mall. Might want to try Lino’s on East State St. too for some really good Italian food. Enjoy your time there.

India House on East Riverside Blvd is excellent – great lunch buffet and dinner. Also Taco Loco on South Main for great Mexican. Octane Ultra Lounge down town (across from the library used to be great but i haven’t been in a few years).

I’m not sure what your budget is but I have a couple suggestions for restaurants in Rockford. Der Rathskeller is an amazing German restaurant with an excellent bar on Auburn Street. I also love JMK Nippon on Perryville Road if you enjoy an asian dinner with a little more drama (they cook at your table). Both of these places are a little bit expensive but in my opinion quite worth it. May I also suggest if you have the time taking a 30-45 minute drive north to Edward’s Apple Orchard on Centerville Road in Poplar Grove they have the best apple cider donuts ever!

As others have suggested:
Alvarez Taco is an outstanding Mexican restaurant. I’m partial to the one in Loves Park on Riverside Boulevard.
Der Rathskeller is also quite good. If memory serves, it is near Auburn and Main.
India House in Loves Park on Riverside (almost to the interstate) is also good.
I’d add:
Stockholm Inn in Rockford near Charles and 20th is a local favorite.
Uncle Nick’s in Rockford near 6th and East State is also a bit of a local legend.
