The U.S.A. is a huge place with a great variety of people and cultures and lifestyles. There are great regional differences in the way people live and in how they talk. I wish that I could give you a quick summary of what people here are like, but that would be impossible. But here is my try: people are people, whether you are in Sweden or the US, or Mexico, or Timbuktu. Pace of life is fastest in the cities and in the Northeast, and slower in the rural areas and in the South and Midwest. I bet that your life in a small town in Sweden is a lot similar to life in a small town in the US.

As for those red lines you mentioned, I don’t see any in your entry now.

The US is complex and dynamic… there is something for everyone. I spent the first 25 years of my life there.

Since it is such an enormous country there are also many inner conflicts due to religion, race, and ethnicity. Some are obvious while others may not stick out to you if you’re just there on a holiday. The ironic thing is that Americans still identify with their heritage will tell you they are part German or Irish, even if this person came to the states 100+ years ago.

There are places in cities where people are all from one country and still speak the language.

It is very much a consumer culture. If you go, you will notice nice quality items ‘on sale’ in virtually every store and there is a mentality to buy and buy. It may even hit you while you’re there, because things are inexpensive. Just step into a grocery store and you will see bulk quanity of virtually anything you can imagine – litres of ketchup etc.

What do you think of when you think of the US? Perhaps it’s hollywood and the glamour of Los Angeles, or New York City and the flashing nonstop lights and action. There are also smaller subcultures with very interesting people, accents, foods, and natural beauty.

In Europe, Cowboys and Indians are glamorized. Don’t go expecting to see them duking it out in the ‘wild west’.

I’ve heard America described as a mixed salad where each little difference adds something interesting to it. I’ve also heard it described as a melting pot, meaning when you come to America you become a part of it since America is a nation of immigrants and everyone melds together.

You will fit right in, if you are only worried about your own back yard, as the US is so big alot of the population never leave their own areas. It is extremely diverse, I hated the place and I loved the place. It is worth visiting the rural areas, cities are the same all over the world – some just have more exspensive shops than others, filled with things designed by people who have taken more designer drugs than others!
