Well, from what I gathered when I was there, there were plenty of longer hikes. We did the South Bubble, which is about an hour, but in that central area there’s a couple longer hikes. We hiked part of the southern ridge of Cadillac Mountain, and I know you can hike the whole thing, which would take you at least 6 hours.
The whole island is easily accessible by bike, hiking, or busses, that take you from one spot to another, as well as into the cities and to the camping grounds. We camped for 3 nights and spent about 4 days, and had plenty to do.

Thank you to all the five of you for taking the time to answer my question. It was very helpful, because it has changed my view on the park: reding travel books here at home I got the impression that it was a place to merely drive through by car. But now I see that I can really go hiking and indeed enjoy two full days there – may be will find it too short…. Now I hope for good weather :-)
Thank you again!
realsupergirl,
did you like the campground facilities?

There are many interconnecting trails that, put together, would easily get you to a six-hour hike. Last time I was there, my daughter’s were too young to hike, so I would get up before dawn, drive to a trail-head, hike for awhile, and be back by 9am when they were up and active.
A couple of my favorite hikes was a combination of the Gorham Mtn Trail and the Beehive Trail (on the eastern side of the island). If you start at the Gorham Mtn Trail parking lot, you can head north, pick up the Beehive trail, and then head over to the coastline and take the Ocean Path back to the parking area (this is probably 4 miles). The trail up the Beehive is awesome.
Another great trail combination is the Pemetic Mtn Trail and the Bubble Rock / South Bubble Trail. You can start by parking at Jordan Pond house, and take the Pemetic Mtn Trail that reaches the summit from the south. Head down the north side on the Bubble-Pemetic trail and then up the South Bubble (past Bubble Rock) and back down to Jordan Pond House. That’s probably another 4 – 4.5 mile trail.
Lastly, heading up Sargent Mtn on the South Ridge trail is also an excellent choice. This is a 5.4 mile out and back trail that provides excellent views of the ocean and Somes Sound.
There are plenty more (I think I heard that there’s over 120 miles of trails on the island), and some of the best scenery I encountered was on foot and not by car. Enjoy!

sjkln,
thank you for the helpful details on the hiking trails. I see I can walk the whole day and enjoy beautiful views. And I undertadn that it is possible to combine variuos hiking routes. This is a good Idea, and I think I might do so, too.
Getting up before dawn is tough! But you foster the idea of going for a hike in the early morning, have late breakfast, drive around a bit and go for another hike ;-)
Thank you!!

I grew up near there, and have made a lot of visits. I strongly recommend stopping in at the visitor’s center to get one of their trial guides. You can get the guide at the campgrounds, but at the visitor’s center you can find out which ones are closed (there was some earthquake damage last year, and they are sometimes closed to protect wildlife). You can also get recommendations from the rangers who work there, which paths are best, which ones might be nice and quiet, etc.

I would definitely do the hike up Cadillac Mountain. It’s been years, but I also did a couple hours along the ocean (it involved lots of rock hopping and some climbing. It wasn’t too strenuous, but it sho’ was fun!)
Enjoy your trip!

I go to Acadia every year. I second Roarksfork in the Cadillac Mountain hike. I would also suggest driving up to the summit before dawn to see the sunrise. It is BEAUTIFUL! If you enjoy mountain biking I would also recommend riding around Eagle Lake, it’s a relaxing hour, hour and a half ride. Stopping at the Jordan Pond House is a must for any trip to Acadia.
Have an excellent trip!

Coffeeaddict213,
thank you for tehhint on the sunrise. So I understand that the access to the park is possible through 24 hours?
I amsurprised, but I will enjoy this!
And Ithink mountainbiking is sth I could/should give a chance, because at home I use my bike like a car – going to work and back and doing the shopping, whichis why I usually do not cycle during vacatons but walk. But 1,5 hours sounds good.
Thank you a lot!
