That would depend on how far you want to go.
From Toronto on a day trip – I would suggest Picton county south of Belleville. Stop by the 50 – 60 ft high dunes at Sandbanks Provincial Park. Check out Bloomfield, Picton, etc – cute little towns. There’s a few free ferries you could take that will get you to Wolfe Island and then into Kingston. Beautiful area… If you buy a road map of the area you’ll see what route to take to get to Kingston from the county using ferries.
If you’re looking for a longer road trip I would suggest driving around the Great Lakes – Again, beautiful area…

How about spots on the Trent-Severn Waterway? Check out the lift locks at Kirkfield and Peterborough, and the marine railway at Big Chute. Hitting all three would easily fill a whole day.

hmmm, i’d definitely say go to Gananaque (real close to Kingston) and visit the 1,000 Islands. Its so beautiful. The hotel there (the real big one on the waterfront), the restaurant/bar there has AMAZING food. and since Gananaque (gan-on-ah-kwaa) is so tiny, visit the cute little towns surrounding it. :)

As someone said above, it depends how far they want to stay and for how long. A nice day trip is up to the Forks of the Credit—they should get a good map, and explore the back roads, visit some of the little towns, and see the actual Forks area.
A longer trip could be up to Algonquin and through the Park to Whitney, then back down through that part of eastern Ontario.

Algonquin Park!!
Go to Southern Ontario if you want to visit cities, but it’s not much fun to road trip through, nothing to look at.
Northern Ontario is much prettier!

I definitely suggest the 1,000 Islands. Gananaque is a great places to swim in the river, take a cruise, buy fruit at the farmers markets (on weekends) and visit Boltd Castle. Brockville, 50 km East, is very pretty. Gorgeous waterfront and interesting history.

I love Wayne’s answers to your question!
Personally, I love the “Northern Wilderness” face of Ontario, and therefore my suggestion would be to travel the Highway 60 corridor through Algonquin Park. Bee-yoo-tiful from start to finish, and you could stop off for day hikes, for gourmet dining (Arowhon Lodge, for one) or to visit the Algonquin Visitor Centre. The Huntsville region (west of Algonquin Park, on the road to Toronto) is a nice area to explore, as is the road all the way up to North Bay.
