I actually spent a semester at Murdoch – a very lovely school (apparently a world-renowned veterinary school – I studied film). Anyway, if you’re in the area, you should definitely go down to Fremantle, aka Freo, (actually closer to Murdoch than Perth). It’s a very cool hippie, frontier-ish town. It’s a good place to just wonder around, but you should plan on visiting the weekend (Friday-Sunday) market.
Little Creatures in Freo and/or the Brass Monkey in Perth are good places for a quality beer (Little Creature Bright Ale was my personal favorite) and some kangaroo steak. The Brass Monkey is technically in Northbridge – directly across from the train station in Perth – and this is definitely the hipster area of the city – another cool place to explore.
I also acquired a taste for good wine while in WA. Western Australia produces nearly all of Australia’s fine, boutique wines. I would really recommend going on a wine tour in the Swan Valley and also hitting the Margaret River Chocolate Factory while you’re at it.
If it’s a rainy day, you should look into what’s playing at the Luna Cinemas in Northbridge or Freo. I saw some very cool films there, I never would have seen in the States.
If Perth, Freo, and Northbridge don’t give you enough to do, you may want to look into taking a day to travel to
Rottnest Island (the most popular vacation spot for locals).

hi! thanks for the advice…do you know where to catch a shuttle or bus to Murdoch University either from Fremantle or Perth?

From Fremantle take the 98/99 Circle Route bus (has a couple stops in town – I usually caught it right outside the market).
From Perth, I think your best bet is taking the train from Perth to Fremantle then catching the 98/99 from there.
I’d recommend buying a 40 ride pass (you can actually get these on campus at the student guild store).
Also, you should check out intravelmag.com – they have (and are always looking for great travel stories) and a forum (sorry, I’m interning for them and I had to make my plug :P ).
I hope you have an awesome trip!
