You got it! Just look at the pictures on this site. It’s totally worth a visit. It is a Sahara-like expanse, almost as far as the eye can see. I believe parts of the original Star Wars movie were shot there (Luke’s home planet of Tattooine).
I drove through on the way from Texas to Albuquerque and was so glad I did. Granted, it was a few hours of driving through the middle of nowhere to get there, but it was worth it.
We even camped there, in a tent. But you have to go to your campsite before dark and stay there because there would be no way to find the trail after dark (it’s marked with posts at the tops of dunes, way too far apart for your flashlight to find). The next morning, I saw the biggest spider I have ever seen in my life.

It’s so worth it! The sand is very white, and there’s a stream right next to it from the mountains. It’s a beautiful sight. When my sister and I went to Taos, we drove up there and camped in the park, and then waded in the stream and climbed the sand dunes the next morning. (They look like they’ll collapse, but they’re actually very hard and stable!) It’s definitely worth the trip if you like the outdoors and exploring stuff. I would highly recommend it.
(But, oh – on the drive there, you’ll probably wonder how such a thing could exist in such a dull place. I remember it being very desolate on the way there.)

absolutely worth it. the last time i was there was 1999. i took the alkali trail about 2 miles into the park. it was really cool to just see white dunes for miles all around. plenty of great shots on flickr.

Definately worth it!
If you can be there for sunrise or sunset, it will be absolute magic.

We had our doubts about visiting White Sands, but we really enjoyed the place. Magical and otherwordly!

I will definitely check this place out on our way to Albuquerque. Sounds cool! We might even camp out, time permitting. My travel mate and I are both equally terrified of spiders, but we’ll deal with it.
