Hi Little Daisy,
My favourite Toronto restaurant is “Fred’s Not Here”
It has a fun name (it’s why I tried it for the first time about ten years ago), the food is excellent, the prices are reasonable and it’s conveniently located in the downtown core.
My other favourite is the 360 at the top of the CN Tower. I know it’s about as far away from “out of the way” as you can possibly be, but really worth the overall experience.
- chef is outstanding, very inventive, the food is delicious
- cuisine is Canadian, with an emphasis on Canadian produce, meat, cheeses, specialties, wines …
- menu usually has selections from regions across the country, Quebec (french), Atlantic and Pacific (seafood), prairie provinces (especially Alberta beef) ... There’s a wide selection for all tastes
they even have an herb garden on site … Fresh!
- exceptionally diverse wine cellar, with both international and Canadian wines… Wine sommelier on staff
- wonderful views … The room rotates every 90 minutes so you can see the city, the harbour, the island … On clear days you can even see the plumes of Niagara falls across Lake Ontario
- try to get reservations timed with daylight / sunset / nightfall which makes for a spectacular transition.
If you can let me know a little about what you and your husband are interested in – art, music, shopping, entertainment, history, architecture, I might be able to offer some suggestions.
Ironically, my wife and I are going to San Fransisco end of July. What’s your favourite restaurant?
Cheers

Fred’s Not Here – an excellent name! And the menu looks pretty promising. I’ve been up in the CN tower but only to look at the view
Coming to SF in July? Pack a sweater. If you like Indian food, Dosa (995 Valencia St) has a nice menu. For German cuisine, Suppenkuche (525 Laguna St) is cool and pretty cozy. And if you’re downtown and looking for a traditional breakfast, Sears (439 Powell St) is a fun place to go.

A helpful reviewer-based site to check out if you are looking for more suggestions for places to eat and go in S.F. is http://www.yelp.com.
Also, if you’re going to have a car, you might want to branch out and travel over the Golden Gate bridge to Marin county (Muir Beach/Woods and the Marin headlands are gorgeous), or cross the Bay Bridge and explore the sunny side of the bay (food-wise, Cesar and Chez Panisse in Berkeley are popular.)

Hi Little Daisy,
I’d recommend Embrujo Flamenco http://www.embrujoflamenco.com/ on the Danforth. It’s a Spanish Tapas restaurant that has live flemenco dancing and guitar every Wed, Thurs and Fri. Considering you get dinner and a show the price is quite reasonable. It’s across the street from the Broadview subway station so it’s very accessible by public transit. The Danforth neighbourhood is worth exploring, there’s lots of shopping, especially if you like accessories.
If your the outdoor type rent a boat and paddle around the Toronto islands. You’ll get the best view of the Toronto skyline while in a canoe.
The St. Lawerence Market and surrounding area have some interesting archetecture and nightlife.
If your looking for somewhere a little eccentric spend an afternoon in kensington market, just north of Dundas St., West of Spadina ave.
Hope this helps.

Embrujo Flamenco was going to be my suggestion. I loved the food, the entertainment, the location, and the Sangria!

Hi! Hope you enjoy our city. =)
For shopping I’d recommend Queen Street West from University to Bathurst, Bloor Street West from Yonge to Bathurst (check out Honest Ed’s just so you can say you went), Roncesvalles Avenue in the west end, and China Town around Dundas and Spadina.
Check out the Bata Shoe Museum if you didn’t make it on your last visit. Also get a local free paper and decide what festivals you would like to attend. In August there’ll be A Dream In High Park, Summerworks Theatre Festival, Irie Music Festival, Taste of the Danforth (not to be missed!), The Festival of Beer, The Pirate Festival, Buskerfest (awesome!), and probably Caribana. Maybe a few more too. You’ll need to visit Kensington Market on the last Sunday of the month if you’re here then.
For restaurants, just stay away from chains and greasy spoons, and eat wherever you’re hungry. It’s all good!

We made it to the Bata Museum last time, but wouldn’t mind going again.
I’ve heard of Kensington Market – I’d love to check it out. Thanks!

Not sure where you are staying..or if you will be driving or taking out public transit system. I like to eat different types of foods. The Danforth Street that BooberFraggle recommended for Spanish food is also known for its great Greek food! There so many restaurants to choose from. And it is a busy area dying the summer months. If you’re here August 10-12, 2007 you can attend http://www.tasteofthedanforth.com/ I go every year! You’ll have lots of good eats and meet many nice people! I also love Jamaican food! Try http://www.therealjerk.com/ Great roti and jerk pork/chicken! I like Buddhist vegetarian at Simon’s Wok at 797 Gerrard Street East. They have great reviews and if you go for lunch they have great specials for under $5.00! Soup, rice and entry and tea! You can’t go wrong! And if you are along Gerrard Street East you have to visit India town for the Indian food and the beautiful Indian saris! I like going to Lahore Tikka House 1365 Gerrard Street East…mmm….fresh naan and chicken tikka! The flavours of Pakistan! For Burritos http://www.burritoboyz.ca/ ! Cheap eats and great tasting! Small place, but lineups out the door and down the street! I also enjoy lunches at Parsi which is authentic Persian food at 141 Spadina Avenue below Queen Street West. And if you’re on Queen street West shopping..there are lots of nice places to shop and eat there too! It is also close to Chinatown! You have to go there too! Try Vietnamese food! I love Xe Lua 254 Spadina Avenue. You’ll recognize a large train on its sign! I call it the train…cos there’s a train on the sign!
If you could…go to the museum! It has changed a lot! New exhibits and new building extension! http://www.rom.on.ca/ Go and see! Also the Ontario Gallery of Art is changing! http://www.ago.net/navigation/flash/frameset.cfm You can also see the OCAD building next door…love it or hate it…it is something to talk about! See my attached pic!
Tell me what you like to eat and I will try to help you! But these are a few of my favourite places! Enjoy your stay! And the food!

My husband and I are omnivores, love diners, and are suckers for anything kitschy or old school.
We went to both the Royal Museum and the Ontario Gallery of Art back in ‘01, and would love to make return visits to both.

Yes – comfort food works for us, but not just in the ‘meatloaf and mashed potatoes’ sense. We like places that have a “mom’s in the kitchen cooking” vibe, especially with different types of cuisine.

Perhaps the best part about living in this city is the amazing variety of restaurants. To help us get a handle on it, the local morning radio show on our national broadcaster does a segment called “Beyond Burgers” that highlights eateries that exist below the radar. You can read the reviews at the following website:
http://www.cbc.ca/metromorning/beyond_burgers/
Wherever you end up staying in the city, you will be able to find at least one or two neat places to eat from this list.
Enjoy your trip!
