A question about this place:
I'm taking the train from Guangzhou to Lhasa, then perhaps flying back from Kathmandu. Any tips or recommendations? Yay or nay to a plan of somewhat 'wingin' it'? Necessary preparations, other than the obvious (visa/guidebook/camera)? Thanks!!!

ran out of space…

so the logistics are:
- doing this alone
- 15-day hustle (more or less)

I hoping to get this going ASAP… I’m under the impression that I don’t need a TTP (TTB?) if I’m entering by train. Research as of now has a backup plan of where to stay and a general sense of how to get from here to there to there, but I’m a general ‘wherever-the-wind-takes-me’ type.

Hope this brings more conclusions…
or it’s just a matter of getting there now!

try as little as possible to wing it, plan a lot… i was in tibet last summer for 2 weeks.. i didnt take the train, i went by air, (jakarta>hongkong>chengdu>lhasa) but its tricky—security is extremely strict.. i don’t know how it is to get in when you’re traveling alone, i thought the only way is to apply for a group visa. but it sounds like youve got it figured out.
also, keep in mind the altitude sickness. i know you read about it in every single guidebook but this shit is serious. the first week i could barely walk a few steps without running out of breath.. its tough. there are these little herbal medicines you can drink there, and you should also check with your doctor to get altitude sickness meds—especially if you’re traveling alone. my friend got sick and in the hospital and there are TONS of people in the lhasa hospital (mostly chinese) suffering from altitude sickness. it’s much better to take it easy for a few days to adjust, and spend more time. i’d also recommend planning your trip out—aka where to go, exactly, because that way you have a plan to fall back on.. and if the plan fails / you get other ideas then you can start winging it! haha.
oh yea… and you might want to spend more than 15 days! i spent two weeks and i wish it was two months.
you are going to have an AMAZING trip.. talk to many people, learn a lot, be careful about discussing the political situation, breathe the crisp clean air, gasp in amazement at the clouds and monasteries, let yourself be carried away!
im by NO means an expert… or even a beginner… tibet is a gigantic beautiful mystery… but feel free to contact me—ihave72bpm@gmail.com (email and msn) and i’d also love to hear about how your trip goes.
good luck!
