My boss is going to Geneva for a conference and then staying afterward for a week's vacation. We're having a hotel emergency, in that it turns out the hotel hosting the conference does not have a room for her from May 22 - 27 (this is once the conference

Hello,

my suggestion is Chambéry, France. It’s a beautiful small town one hour away from Geneva by train.

You can check the train schedules to/from Geneva here:

Another good choice would be Grenoble or Annecy, though I’m not sure how far are they From Geneve.

I hope this helps.

For somewhere a lot closer, I’d suggest Coppet ( a very small hotel here) or Nyon, which has a number of hotels. These are a very short (20min) train ride from Geneva and within Switzerland.
Annecy and Grenoble are a long journey away.

Pedantically, Switzerland isn’t in the EU, but it’s no problem crossing the border at all. You can take a public bus.

E.g. Cern is built in Switzerland and France.

As for more specific info, I can’t really help there.

Almost as pedantically as Britain refusing to join the Euro currency or the Schengen border agreement.

True, but irrelevant to the question, and not pedantic either as nobody claimed the opposite.

I just believe people shouldn’t throw rocks when they sit under a glass roof.

Peace!

I just believe that people should recognise the difference between rock throwing and correcting factual errors.

For what it’s worth, I’m not at all happy with the relationship between EU and UK, unneccesarily antagonistic. Yes, the EU needs reform, but that’s not going to happen if outside of it.

I would rather suggest Lausanne. It’s a bit further than Nyon, just along the lake. Nyon is really not a nice city, but Lausanne is stunning. Your boss might even forget Geneva and stay in Lausanne.

From there she can either take a boat to Geneva (fantastic views) or the train. There’s a train every 15 minutes which gets to Geneva in 40 minutes.

That way there is no border crossing., no hassle with documents or taxes on certain items, if your boss plans to go shopping for example.

Being a small city but with a lot of international venues (conferences + organisations), hotels in Geneva are often quickly booked (yet, it is not a holiday period – only May 17th and 28th are days off). The reason may be that you’re looking for a reasonnably cheaper hotel, which is not so easy to find in Geneva…

In comparison to what Switzerland may offer, public transportation in France is not so developped in the region. Though, if she intends to visit the French side, it’s better to stay in France (Chambéry yes or Annecy, Aix-les-Bains, ...). Annemasse, please avoid, even if closer. Prefer Evian or Thonon.

But I think the Swiss part is more interesting and Lausanne is an important node within the railway network (-> Geneva 40min, Bern 1h, Zurich/Basle 2h10). Good be a better starting point.

Be aware that Switzerland is geographically in the middle of the European Union but does not belong to it! It means that there are still borders (pass/ID mandatory to cross it) and the currency is not the Euro (largely accepted though) but the Swiss Franc…
