I agree I don’t believe you can get a visa directly from the U.S. I went there as a competitor for a professional boxing match so the organizers from South Korea arranged everything.

As far as I know you won’t get a visa directly from the US since the DPRK doesn’t have an representation there. But in Beijing there are several agencies that organize tours in the DPRK, including all formalities for a visa.

The thing is, you must be “invited” – but by joining a tour group this is arranged. Theoretically it’s possible to visit the DPRK individually, but it gets expensive, since every “tour group” (even a group of one) must have two guides at all times, plus a driver.

I booked with a travel agency in the Netherlands, and they arranged the trip via an agency in Beijing – I don’t know the name but I do know there are several. Your best bet would be to google around to find them, and email for details. (Or if you have ample time, you could just travel to Beijing and see what you can arrange from there. Even if you’re stuck there, there’s plenty to see and have a good time. ;))

Visas for US citizens are available to DPRK, but only for a very limited number of days, places, and times. You can only enter the country for three days, you must be on an organized tour, and you can only visit certain locations. I have some American friends who went to DPRK for a three day trip, but did not go to Pyongyang. I think they visited one of the mountains in the South of the country. It is possible for Americans to go to Pyongyang, but only when the Mass Games are on and only for three days. Koryo Tours (based out of Beijing) organizes special trips for Americans, and if you book a trip with them, they help arrange all the visa and travel stuff.
