A question about this place:
Anyone have ideas about good restaurants in neighboring towns to take my parents and my fiance's parents to? I'm hoping for nice but not too expensive.

I’m partial to the Mango Cafe on 435 Hamilton in downtown Palo Alto.

If you’re willing to pay a little more, Zibibbo on 430 Kipling Street is excellent, too:

You should take them to St. Michael’s Alley on Emerson! It’s one of the best restaurants to take parents to.

On a budget in Palo Alto….Buca Di Beppo(on Emerson) has a great atmosphere and family sized portions…..Also Italian, Osteria (on Hamilton) is a bit more classy, but still relatively inexpense…call ahead because of very limited seating.

For something a bit different…. Straits Cafe on El Camino is Singaporean Asian fusion is great, classy, and not terribly expensive ....Bill Clinton has eaten there…. Splurge on the Chili Crab… it is one of my favorite dishes worldwide.

Also, great Cuban food at La Bodegguita del Medio (also ~$15/per person) on California Ave….my favorite resturant in PA.

Some chains are not that bad either…. Cheesecake Factory (on University), PF Changs (near the Stanford Shopping Centre).

Where are you?

There are SO many wonderfully talented chefs in Palo Alto that it is difficult to choose a restaurant.

California Avenue really stands head and shoulders above any other destination in Palo ALto Dining for a few reasons.

Other than the fact the Palo Alto’s city council obviously fails them by placing a Starbucks across from Printer’s Inc. Cafe!

Palo Alto Sol is BOMB! The family has been in the restaurant business for generations -and there is a larger -Parents restaurant called “La Fiesta” in Mountain View if you want more of a cantina type of atmosphere. Palo Alto Sol is more intimate. Both restaurants are wonderful -but La Fiesta serves guests a minted consomme’ before dinner! Get the combo enchilada’s (Grandma’s Guajillo/Red Mole’chicken)
They can also mix up a mean margarita!

There are two French Restaurants on Cal Ave that are both quite good.

Nora’s Cafe served up amazing Mussels in a rich creamy lobster infused broth and included herbed french fries to soak up all of the goodness.

The house coffee at Sophie’s has to be experienced to be believed! Incredibly good! I am guilty of ordering the same thing three times at this restaurant -poached prawn and asparagus on baguette with a tarragon mayonnaise. It is perfect! Sophie’s also can be quiet early in the day if you like a little tranquility and pretty sunlight filtering in to your coffee. The prices are reasonable.

I also recommend St Michael’s Alley. It is a place with important heritage and really exemplifies the culture of the town before the Real Estate boom took place in Palo Alto -and they have good wine and baked brie!
