It really depends on whether you are looking for rural or city and mountain or desert. I know Northern New Mexico pretty well and If you let me know I can give you more information. Santa Fe is very expensive and stay away from Espanola!
I think living in the city would be probably more fun and would probably have more things to do. But I don’t know how expensive most of the cities are. Someone had suggested to me Las Cruces, but then I read somewhere else that it has a large drug problem. I don’t know what to believe or think since I’ve never been there. I will take any suggestions you have as far as Northern NM, whether rural or city. I think the desert would be nice. I’m not sure about the mountains, but like I said as long as it’s safe (pretty low crime rate) and inexpensive (but I can fluctuate on that part as long as it’s not like super super expensive)
I live in Las Cruces. It’s actually pretty safe and still relatively inexpensive – though real estate prices are rising. The drug problems I’d say are pretty much limited to specific neighborhoods – Picacho Street and the area around Mesquite and Tornillo. There is pleanty to do here since it has the state’s second largest University.
In Las Cruces, anywhere around the University, Telshor area, or East Mesa you should feel pretty safe. Also you might look into north of town in the Dona Ana area or even as far north as Hatch. You might look into Mesilla and Mesilla Park. You can still find cheaper housing there and the areas have a lot of authentic-southwestern/arty feel.
Also in southern New Mexico you might look at Silver City. It’s in the foothills of the Black Range (Gila Wilderness) with a growing arts scene and rather cheap. As far as I know it’s safe.
I’m not as familiar with Northern New Mexico – but what other poster’s suggested concerning Santa Fe, Espanola and Las Vegas seems pretty accurate to me. Albuquerque has it’s good and bad neighborhoods, isn’t extraordinary expensive (not like Santa Fe), and definately has the most to offer as far as activities.
How about Las Vegas NM?… it’s been quite a few years since I was up there, but it seemed like a terrific little town. I would expect the houses to be a bargain too.
Hmmm….I’ll look in to it. Thank you.
santa fe can be as cheap or expensive as you make it. at my old place my roommate and i shared $880 in monthly rent. and santa fe is pretty fun.
albuquerque is cheaper all around, and there’s a lot to do, but i’d never want to live there, personally. kind of trashy in a lot of areas.
