Universal Studios is located in Universal City, which is on the Metro line. There’s a hostel at the Metro station one stop back, near the Hollywood and Highland complex (there are actually several in the area, but this is the one I’m talking about:
http://www.orangedrivehostel.com/) I’ve never stayed there, but some of my friends have, and they seemed to enjoy themselves.
I used to work at Disneyland, incidentally, and while the bus lines do go right to the park, the Metro line isn’t a direct connection or within easy walking distance. You’re going to want to put some serious thought into questions like “do we want to stay in Anaheim and just go to Universal for the day, or do we want to stay in the Hollywood hostel the whole time and do the long trek to Disney for the days we’re going?” When my car died it was a very trying 2 hour experience getting to either location (I actually lined up for Star Wars just down the street from that hostel,) and I lived a LOT closer to Anaheim than to Hollywood.
All of this will be heavily influenced by whether or not you have a car in town (I recommend it if at all possible—parking is expensive but easily found next to both the hostel and the Disneyland Resort.) It is possible, though not convenient, to go from one to the other using bus lines and the Metro. When I worked there, there was a shuttle between the two parks, but a quick Google search isn’t turning anything up. Consider calling the Walt Disney Travel Company (the California call center is in Anaheim, so many of the helpers have direct experience) to see if they have information about the shuttle service.
Note also that it’s a hefty and not entirely safe walk from the hostel on Hollywood and Orange to services like grocery stores and bars. Don’t plan on doing a ton of wandering around near the hostel at night (I say this as someone who’s actually camped out on the street overnight in a tent less than half a mile from that location - note that I survived, but also that I have the kind of stories to share that I don’t tell my parents.) This is one big advantage of being on the Metro line, though if you’ve only been to cities like Washington DC or New York you’re going to be in for a nasty shock, as most of the best stuff isn’t really on the Metro directly and getting places involves a lot more bus transfers than in other cities - even Universal City really requires a shuttle ride from the station, because it’s up a VERY steep hill (I’ve walked up it twice. Trust me, don’t do it.)

They were trying to get from the Hollywood Sign to Disneyland, but the Hollywood Sign is visible from the complex above the Metro station closest to the hostel I mentioned, so.
(remember I said there are other hostels? I know of at least two more in Hollywood, and one in Santa Monica. Look at all the various hostel websites to get a good idea of just how many options you have.)

Thanks for your detailed answer.
I would like to rent a car if i could. But the thing is, i’m not familiar with the road in California, plus the driver-seat in Singapore is on the right side. I dont want to take any risk in my trip in the States.
In fact, i only have 3 days in LA. I’m reaching LAX on the 12th of may, night time. From the airport, i probably will take shuttle van (thinking of booking it on the internet) to somewhere near Anheim, stay there for a night, so that i can go to Disneyland early on the next morning.
After a day trip in Disneyland, then i’m planning to get a hostel near Universal Studios and spend a night there. Early in the next morning, go to Universal Studio.
After a day trip in Univeral Studios, i’ll go to LA downtown, and stay day for a night. The next morning,go around LA downtown.
I need to catch the flight from LAX to Chicago on the same day.
From the itineraries above,it’s better to
a) spend 2 nights in Anheim, 1 night in LA downtown
b) spend 1 night in Anheim, 2 nighs in downtown LA
c) spend 3 nights in 3 different places
I’m not sure how long would it take to reach Universal Studios from Disneyland.I tried to search ‘bus or shuttle bus’ using Google, but nothing turned out.
Thank you

Cheers to lloannna who gave you excellent answers. Everything is pretty much covered. Downtown LA is not too far from LAX, but it depends on the time of your flight and you need to consider the traffic conditions at that time.

I’d stay overnight in Anaheim and then decide:
—if the second night is a Friday or Saturday, or it’s between May and September, and I wanted to watch the fireworks and/or Fantasmic, I’d stay the second night in Anaheim, BUT
—if the second night is a night other than Friday or Saturday, and it’s between September and May, I’d know that the park closes at 8pm and there are no fireworks, and I’d spend the second and third nights in Hollywood.
In a car in the dead of night it can take as little as 50 minutes to get from Disneyland to Universal City, excluding time to get to your car and get out of the Mickey and Friends parking structure, and also excluding the time it takes to find a spot at Universal, park, and walk to the entrance. Any shuttle or taxi will take more time than that (probably more like 75 minutes,) mostly because there’s more traffic at non-3am times—but you get to skip the parking hassles.
I’ve never been an adult tourist from out of state at Disneyland, so I’m not familiar with the details of most transit operations other than the bus and metro, which will take a VERY big chunk out of your three days. I’ve misplaced my list of Disney email addresses, however, Guest Relations is always happy to talk to you:

These people run a shuttle from Anaheim to Universal. It’s more than I’d pay, but since you don’t want to drive, it’s probably the fastest alternative. The timing won’t seriously cut into anything you’d want to do at Universal Studios (they open later in the day than Disneyland does) and there’s no law that says you have to take the shuttle back to Anaheim. You’d have to get yourself to one of the hotels in the Anaheim area that they pick up from, but the city has set up a little bus route to take people around the various hotels, the convention center, and the Disneyland Resort, so that shouldn’t be hard. The tour site says their shuttle takes 90 minutes: that probably includes some wandering around or “okay, everyone, sit down so we can get moving” pad time, since they’re operating outside normal rush hours.

I suspect, however, that the Fullerton hostel (that’s the closest one to Disneyland) people probably know this stuff far better than I do, as they’ve certainly had occasion to research it for someone before. Their email address is:

I’ve never tried them in particular, but most hostel staffs are really nice about answering questions.
I see no good reason to stay overnight in downtown LA—Hollywood is a lot more interesting after 5pm (though again, don’t go wandering around the side streets alone at night). I lived in LA for most of my childhood plus three full years as a working adult and I’ve never had occasion to do anything downtown at night (and when I’ve had to drive through downtown after dark, usually because of a freeway closure, it’s been eerily quiet and under-lit.) Amongst other things, I think it’d be quite a challenge to find a place to eat dinner downtown (especially as compared with Hollywood and West Hollywood.) The metro system runs pretty late into the night if there really is something you want to do downtown after dark, and it starts up early in the morning, and so I can’t think of a good reason to check out of or even just walk by a good hostel in Hollywood in order to sleep downtown one night.
(Los Angeles is a fascinating place, architecturally speaking, and the area is home to some great museums: my favorites are the museum of Natural History and the Museum of Tolerance—there’s also a great museum of Japanese-American heritage, and of course, Griffith Park and Observatory isn’t too far away. It’s all 10am-5pm stuff, though, unless you’re seeing a show, and if you are seeing a show, you’re likely to be in Hollywood.)

Ilonna, thanks a lot! I wish I could spend a little bit more time in LA, considering the fact that i’ll be speding the entire 3-month summer break in the States!
