Directions can me mapquested. If you mean transportation, there is the Metrolink, public buses, tour buses and cabs.

As far as hostels, there isn’t much in the general area of Universal Studios except hotels and freeways. You might fare better getting one of the cheaper hotels in Anaheim near Disneyland than anything near Universal City.
