A question about this place:
I'm going to be in Seattle Aug 9th-14th, I'm wondering about where I should stay (the hostel is sold out). What are some of the things that are must-see, but not necessarily tourist traps? Clubs, cafes, restaurants, parts of the city etc...Gracias!!

Ok, so as far as loding goes, I have no idea where to stay cheaply. What I would recommend is going to priceline.com and checking out cheap hotel deals.

But stay in Seattle proper. Don’t stay in Kirkland or Bellevue or Kent or Edmonds. I also know that there are some good Bed and Breakfasts in the Capitol Hill Neighbourhood.

That brings me to touristy stuff:

Food -

Sushi: I Love Sushi in Eastlake or Nishino in Madison Valley

Vietnamese – Tamarind Tree in the International District

Malay – Malay Satay Hut in the International District

Sandwiches – Alligator Pear in Belltown and The Other Coast Cafe in Ballard.

French – Le Pichet downtown

Favorite Watering Holes:

Tost – Fremont (Great and beautiful neighborhood btw)

The White Horse – Pike Place Market (also a big tourist attraction.)

Pretty natural stuff:

Golden Gardens beach in Ballard at Sunset

Volunteer Park on Capitol Hill (conveniently located next to the cemetery where both Bruce and Brandon Lee are buried)

There are two different easy ways to go kayakking:

1. Agua Verde in the University district is right on the lake. If you go out the back they rent Kayaks.

2. The UW has a canoe/kayak rental depot on the lake as well. You’ll need a second person for a canoe, though.

Places to go at night:

Chop Suey on Capitol Hill – usually good live music

Twilight Exit on Madison – Rock and Roll Karaoke on Sundays

and there is lots more stuff but I am too lazy to post more right now. I will post more later.

Hey, it’s been a while since I’ve been, but I’d concur with most of the comments so fsr. It looks like someone deleted commenst about the space needle, so I can’t exactly comment, but my opinion is that it’s a fun thing to do for Sunday brunch (only time the food is worth it (champagne and mimosas, smoked salmon and omelettes, etc.)

Lots of good eats on Capitol Hill, good Thai place there; Wild Ginger is down close to Pike Place Market, so you could try it after a trip to pubs there. Blue Moon bar is where exactly, I don’t remember anymore, but used to hang out there. Lots of jazz and dance clubs at Pioneer Place (also Elliot Bay bookstore is cool); funky hippie neighborhood at Fremont, alternative bookstore there. Also Red & Black bookstore near Pike Place, feminist bookstore somewhere up from Captiol hill, sorry, my memory is hazy. if you have access to a car some hiking trips: Staircase in the Olympics, biking on Orcas Island (there’s a commune run hotel or spa there, I had a friend who lived there, so I have no idea how much it costs, but may be worth looking into). I’ll post more if I remember more. Have a great trip.

You must take a Ferry ride while you are there. There are thousands of islands in the Puget Sound. There are tiny little islands about 10 feet across that might be jammed with about 50 giant pine trees. Quite often on the ferries, I have seen killer whales or dolphins.

There is a Ferry Terminal on Pier 52, it goes to Bainbridge Island or Bremerton (on the Olympic Peninsula). Also, there are ferries that leave from Pier 50 going to Vashon Island.

The best ferry trip is all the way up to Victoria BC (on Vancover Island), it’s pretty much an all day trip there and back.

If you can get there, Friday Harbour on San Juan Island is (in my opinion) the most beautiful place in the world! Also Anacortes island is pretty cool.

It’s a little touristy, but there used to be a lot of good places to eat near or in Pike Place Market which is at the end of Pike st. near the piers (I forget which pier).

Okay, these might be considered “touristy” by some, but I think a couple of definite places to see in Seattle are:
1) Pike Place Market
2) Woodland Park Zoo
3) Gas Works Park
4) Washington State Ferry
5) Summer Nights at the Pier
6) The Fremont Troll (Under the Aurora Avenue Bridge - sometimes called the George Washington bridge - at N. 36th Street)

These are fun & fairly cheap (if not free).

A fantastic place to eat is the Cactus Restaurant (4220 E Madison St; Seattle, WA 98112; 206-324-4140). “mix of Southwest, Mexican and Latin flavors.” Go during the week, not quite as crowded. Two people eating, with alcohol, plan to spend about $60. I’m quite frugal, but I found this place to be worth the money.

That’s Pike Place Market, the number one tourist attraction in Seattle. Amazing. I wouldn’t miss it if I were you. It’s just awesome to be there – unless you hate the smell of fish, then don’t go. lol This is definitely a place you shouldn’t miss though. That website has the exact location of the market so it’s easy to find. :)

My parents spent a few nights of our Seattle stay in Camano Island (it’s technically on San Juan Island) once and raved on and on about their stay, so you might look into an Inn on that island if you have a chance.

Take the ferry to Vancover Island as well. That’s nice.

Other than that, I’d suggest trying the coffee, the clam chowder (oohmazing), and just shopping downtown.

Hope you have a great and safe treat! Have an awesome time.

You Should find out where Herron Island is. That place is cool. There is always somthing to do. The best time to go there is in the summer because there are lots of teens to hang out with and it dry for once. And everyone has a sence of hummur… At least everyone I met. And if you like wildlife at low tide you can sea a sunken boat on the north shore with thing living in it.

Try the Green Tortoise Hostel.

Food wise, depends on your mood and your likes. There’s tons of great food all around. The best sandwiches are on Capitol Hill at the Honey Hole (chauchy’s favorite is golden). Sushi is prolific here. Wasabi Bistro on 2nd Ave in Belltown has a pretty nice Happy Hour. There are also a few 24 hour diners. Minnies (they’ve gone down hill) the young hang out of Hurrican (8th and Vine?) and then The Five Point (small little dive that stole my heart) on 5th and Denny. Tell me what kind of food and budget and I’ll try to help.

After 2am go to Neighbors if you want to dance (Capitol Hill). It’s a gay club, but everyone goes if you want to dance after the bars close. Then you have free Bingo Monday nights at one of my favorite bars in Lower Queen Anne called JaBu’s. There’s a glass blowing studio that’s pretty neat on 5th and Bell. On Sunday there is an icecream cruise that has free icecream on our beautiful Lake Union, which you should also kayak on. There are places along Westlake Ave. to get a kayak.

Any other questions? Just let me know.
