A question about this place:
Is January a silly time of year to visit Stockholm? Is everything still open or does is close down to tourists slightly in the winter months? Will it be very very cold?! Thank you!

It’s supposed to be much colder than it is now, there is a lack of snow at the moment. But usually it’s around 30 F at the highest or 23 at the lowest, though it can feel much colder so warm hat and mittens on.
Everything is still open in the winter, the city doesn’t close.
January isn’t exactly a silly time to visit, but it’s not the best, in my humble opinion—I always feel so miserable from the lack of light during this month. I’d rather suggest May or September, those are the best months in my opinion, but come whenever.

I agree – May or September. I love Stockholm in the summer but if you want to get the best view of Stockholm as it normally is – May and September is great. I also like sunny October a lot. Rainy October and November is the worst.

Mmm, but you guys say this because you’re Swedish. I think for foreigners, it’s much more “Nordic” in winter. That said, I love the place and would go any time of year :))

It can be very cold, but if you take warm coat, hat, gloves, you’ll be fine. I actually like Stockholm in winter, it somehow seems more appropriate in the snow. And everything’s open, don’t worry about that. You’ll have a great time!!

Only problem is there is no snow yet and it is still over zero celsius.

That’s disappointing. But I still love it, even without snow. Just so long as the candles are out in force and Pelikan’s still serving meatballs… :)

Hi!

I visited Stockholm during the summer, as I come from a Desert, the climate was cold for me even if the locals were all dressed in summer clothes :P

There are some turist atractions that are only open for a few months in summer, like the viking ship that takes you around the islands in Stockholm and offers a viking dinner on board. It only is open in june, july and august.

But also I was told by a very nice lady living in stockholm that winter is very pretty to visit if you don’t mind the cold, very few hours of light each day, but cozy fireplaces and the city lights; I guess it depends on wheter you like summers or winters better :)

I was in Stockholm last winter. I had a good time though it was snowing a little. Nordic Countries are quite charming in the winter although, you can make most of your days in the summer. Some museums are closed in the winter, though … and ofcourse there is the scandinavian night life you would not want to miss :)

If your budget permits it, I suggest you go one trip in the winter and one in the summer. Both season will give you a different kind of experience and I assure you both will be wonderful!

After living in Sweden through summer and winter last year, I agree that winter certainly has its charms. Stockholm is a big enoguh city that stuff is still open, and you will avoid the tourist crush of summer. When I visited Stockholm in summer I met far more obnoxious American tourists in massive tour groups than Swedes. Would be nice if it started to snow though!

I’ve done European vacations in Jan, Feb, May, June, Sept, and Oct. I really enjoyed Europe in Jan/Feb and am heading back in three weeks. The only thing that stinks is the lack of sunlight, so I recommend getting up and getting out right when the sun is up. Otherwise, you will have a run of the town as few tourists will be out and about.

As for Stockholm, there is so much to do, that even museums that are closed will not leave you sitting on your bum in a hotel. Do some research ahead of time and see if there are any winter festivals in the area, etc.
