A question about this place:
My boyfriend is very new to St. Louis and I'm here visiting for a few days... any recommendations for "do not miss" destinations?

The City Museum. It’s one of the best museums in the world!

Thanks for the recommendation! I looked it up here on 43 Things after I read your response and it looks fascinating! I guess I know where we’re off to this weekend. :)

Seconded. This place is great.

This is the first place we ended up going. It was amazing! It really is incomparable to any museum I’ve ever been. My kiddos asked about it and the best I could come up with was “It’s a big playground for adults!” There were numerous children there, of course, but I liked that grown-ups were involved in the playing as well. My boyfriend and I both had a great time here, thank you for the recommendation!

There is a guy in grand central station that makes fudge with a paddle on a huge table who puts on quite a show. Also, if the weather is decent (I didn’t like the cold) you should try to tour the Budweiser factory. Awesome, especially if you like beer. Have fun!

My boyfriend is a beer afficionado so the brewery is a definite stop. Thanks for the heads up about the weather- I’ll dress warm! (I don’t like the cold so much either!) And who can resist fudge?! We’ll have to stop in and see this guy at work. :) Thanks!

If your boyfriend really likes his beer, you should make it out to Growlers Pub. They have somewhere around 200 different kinds of beers…things you’ve never heard of before and good pub food.
If you’re looking for really nice food, definitly stick around Washington Street downtown OR go into Clayton (up hwy 40, Right on Brentwood – pass the mall and Maggianno’s and make a right on Maryland…pick a street on the right and start exploring, everything is good down there).

Go to The Arch! Take a ride to the top and if you’re interested in architecture see the movie about how the Arch was built. It lasts around 30 minutes.

Go to Ted Drewes Frozen Custard and partake in a delicious St. Louis tradition.

Visit Union Station for shopping and dining. Someone already mentioned The Fudgery, where the employees make the fudge and put on a show while doing it.

The St. Louis Zoo is excellent and it’s free! The St. Louis Art Museum is located in Forest Park with the Zoo, it’s also free and worth a visit.

Across the street (Highway 64) is the St. Louis Science Center. Entry is free and there are many interesting things to see and do.

Grants Farm in South St. Louis County is fun, too.

Enjoy your visit.

We went up in the arch, that little car was quite the experience! :)

We’ll head over to Grant’s Farm when it opens up. Looks like a place the kiddos will enjoy, too!

These guys have given some good answers. If you go to City Museum, stay on Washington for Dinner and drinks (if you’re old enough). Some great spots. For eclectic shops and other eateries and restaurants try The Loop, and The Central West End.

The A-B tour is great. Only four A-B breweries in the country have tours (Jacksonville, St. Louis, Ft. Collins, and Fairfield CA) and St. Louis is the original, historic brewery, not the steel shed ones the other places have.

Enjoy your stay!

We took a tour of the A-B brewery, as recommended… it was really cool! We were especially excited about the free samples at the end. ;) The Clydesdales were gorgeous, I couldn’t believe how well-kept the stable was- if you can call it that! Heck, MY house doesn’t have a chandelier! ;)

Here is one of my favorite places…http://www.chayoon.com
It’s a sushi and tea bar and they make the best Bubble Tea ever! Also, I would recommend going across the river to Collinsville, IL to see Cahokia Mounds. They have an awesome interpretive center. Seeing the city from the top of the Arch is definitely an experience…and if you’re still there in July then I highly recommend Fair St. Louis! Oh, it’s making me miss ma Lou :) No way you can’t have fun. University City is kind of the night life hot spot. There is a nice neighborhood w/some nice bars and stuff around Cha Yoon, gay friendly, kinda fun place to hang out and people watch.

Ditto to all above. My picks would be: City Museum, Arch, Science Center, Union Station, Ted Drewes (on Chippewa). Eat in the following areas: Central West End, The Loop, Laclede’s Landing and Washington Avenue.

If you’re up for just leaving the t-shirt and jeans on, Blueberry Hill in the U-City Loop has some GREAT burgers. It’s consistently rated the best burgers in the country by MSN Citysearch. Plus, the decor in the place is fantastic.

Across the street from that is Fitz’s Root Beer…they make their own plus several other sodas and the food “ain’t half bad either”.

This is where we had dinner. I agree- fantastic burgers! Loved the novelty items on display as well. Great recommendation! Thank you. :)

City Museum is a definite must-see. On your way to or from, you should stop for some gelato at the Gelateria on Washington Ave. You may also want to go bowling or take in a movie at the Moolah (on Lindell)...it’s far from an ordinary movie experience – full bar and leather couches! And Cathedral Basilica (also on Lindell) is extraordinary, and the largest collection of mosaic art in the world. The Missouri Botanical Gardens is also fantastic, but at this time of year won’t be quite as lush. But I do believe they still have the Chihuly exhibit there, and the Japanese Garden is spectacular any time of the year. St. Louis Art Museum in Forest Park is free, and has an astounding collection. Also, since your man’s a beer aficionado, you may also want to check out Schlafly Brewery in Maplewood, just outside the city limits.
A few restaurants/bars to try:
Bailey’s Chocolate Bar (“Dessert bar”)(Lafayette Square – Park Ave.) – Great beer selection
Venice Cafe (bar)(Benton Park/Soulard – Pestalozzi Ave.) – interesting place
Cha Yoon (sushi)(Central West End – Euclid Ave.)
Wasabi (sushi)(Downtown – Washington ave.)
O’Connell’s (pub food) (Kingshighway/Shaw)
The Famous Bar (Chippewa/Southampton)
Mangia Italiano (bar/restaurant)(South Grand – Grand s. of Arsenal)
Pho Grand (Vietnamese)(South Grand – Grand S. of Arsenal)
Bevo Mill (breakfast)(Bevo – Gravois Rd.)
Upstairs Lounge (South Grand – Grand S. of Arsenal)
Tin Can Tavern (restaurant/bar)(Tower Grove South – Morganford Rd.) – great food & great CANNED beer selection (don’t judge!)
Tanner B’s (restaurant/bar)(Fox Park – Shenandoah Ave.)
Van Goghz (martini bar)(Fox Park – Shenandoah Ave.)

I second on elmedico. Go to Blueberry Hill. Its the best. And don’t forget to buy some of their buffalo fries. They are amazing. Also be sure to check out the city museum.

We ordered the buffalo fries, as recommended… we loved ‘em! Thanks!

As far as bars go, I recommend the Royale. I believe it’s on Arsenal. It has lots of fun cocktails with St. Louis-themed names. Try ‘em all. The Budweiser and Schlafly breweries are also fabulous.

addmission is free, and for a reasonable additional cost, you can see the seal show which is fun.
