A question about this place:
I will be in Savannah, for the first time, this weekend through the holiday. I am looking for a few cool places (bar, pool hall, coffee, sports place) for my brother and I to hang and catch up. Any suggestions? Is there a free local city paper?

There was a nice brew pub, I think it was called the Moon River Brewing Company. That was pretty nice and I think they made their own beers. I don’t remember a free local paper, but if you go down to the riverfront you will be able to find some cool things to do. We went in January last year and there was still a lot going on.

The Crab Shack was fun, too. :P

There’s so much to see, it’s just worth it to take entire days walking around. The Historical district is great- the waterfront has a lot of cool places, but it’s really touristy. Just take the time to walk around, the best coffee shops and bars are around the Savannah College of Art and Design. There’s a lot of free publications and a couple of newspapers. There’s a lot of historical tours- the Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil tour is the most touted but the night ghost walk is the best. Bonneventure Cemetary is beautifull. If you read Midnight, the statue from the book cover isn’t there anymore. The museum downtown has a replica and the story behind it. Have a great time!

The first night there we took the river boat dinner cruise. It was good food and the sunset on the river was stunning.

The next day we went to Mrs. Wilkes Boarding house to eat lunch. Had to get in line about 10 or 10:30AM. You can’t imagine how good food can be. It really is worth the hour wait.

After lunch, we wandered the squares and alleys and side streets of the historic district, from Forsyth Park to the river. We got lost 2-3 times. Had afternoon latte at a sidewalk cafe that is part of the Savannah School of Art and Design. http://www.scad.edu/admission/visit/tour/aux_gryphon.cfm

That evening was a good time to go to the river front. We bought some pralines and saw candy being made at the Savannah Candy Store on the Riverfront. http://www.savannahga.net/dining/savannahcandy.html
There are lots of bars and shops and restaurants down there. We had a snack at Wet Willie’s. (We were still full from lunch at Mrs. Wilkes.)

The next day we went to Bonneventure Cemetary. It was a good place for some quiet time. The sculptures and grounds are beautiful. It is also on the river. If the weather is lovely take a picnic lunch.

That night for supper we went to Love’s Seafood - about 15 minutes from Savannah. They serve the best hush puppies I ever ate in my whole life. Yep. Their seafood is good too - so is the view of the river outside the windows—but the hush puppies are the living end. The restuarant is on US 17 in Kings Ferry, Georgia, just off I-95. The place is sort of hidden, down off the road on the northeast side of US 17. You may have to ask someone.

There are many more things to do. That is what we did. You can’t be there and not relax - it is a lovely place. Go here and see pictures - just excuse my bare bones presentation:

Mrs. Wilkes is a daily brunch in a historic home in the historic district. A little bit expensive, and there’s usually a line, but worth it if you and your brother like to bond over eating delicious vittles!
There was also a pool hall away from the touristy area I went to but I can’t remember for the life of me what it was called.

well.. I liked Venus de milo. A few years ago, a bartender named George would make the BEST white chocolate Martini!

There’s also a cool Irish bar in city Market – actually City Market has a lot oof cool places.

Food wise – Lady and Sons is really good.. but now that the owner has a TV show on the food network i can just imagine that it’s even MORE crowded.

Riverstreet is great.. and for some fun.. savannah smiles – a dueling piano bar is great!

For fun karaoke – Savannah Blues is a great place.. go late and you will catch some of the funniest and drunkest people performing.

man i miss Savannah!

www.savannahnow.com This is the local paper that lists events and things going on.

If you like coffee a good place to chill is Gallery Espresso on Bull St. For a pub, try Churchill’s on Bay or Six Pence on Bull.

Good Pizza hangout – Vinnie Van Go Go’s in City Market or Mellow Mushroom on Liberty.

Any place that looks cool downtown is usually pretty good. The Historic district is booming with tourism, so most places are fun hang out spots.

So how did your weekend turn out? Would you care to give us a review?

Sorry I missed your question in December. I was escaping the wonderful mild winter weather for a more edgy Chicago winter.

I just enjoy wandering in the area south of the river from the Walk and the Front, between MLK and the East Side. Plenty to see and do.
