A question about this place:
Are there good places for bicycling in Savannah? How about bike rentals? Thanks! Alan

Answers:

It’s true there are lots of cobblestones, but if you can bear that, I would imagine a bike ride through the historic district would be lovely. There is a lot to see, and biking would be easier on you than walking, but would make everything easier to see than taking a trolley or bus tour. Also, you might see if riding bikes on the big bridge across the Savannah River is allowed (Hwy 17). I think I remember there being a pedestrian lane, but I could be wrong. Maybe there’s a bike lane, too. That would be a tough, but fun ride.

I don’t know about bike rental though…

When my brother lived there, biking was his primary mode of transportation. Savannah’s the kind of place to move through at a slow pace, and a bike (and the pace of traffic there) would allow you to do that. I’m not familiar with any bike rental places though.

There are many places to bike, and those stones aren’t true cobblestones. You can manage them with a mountain bike.

The buses are equipped to carry bikes, as many SCAD students and military too, like to get around on bike.

I would think going over the Eugene Talmadge Bridge is no joke. And going up and down the river bluff’ll work ya.

There are some nice country roads which you will find I believe, very scenic. I suggest the back roads in Fort Stewart, as the traffic is not so very bad.

For the heat, we have many many shady live oaks, cool places to get out of the heat, such as cafe’s and museums, the beach, the rivers… Come on down! You will have fun, Ah gaihrontee!

Did you get enough information? I might look up some more, if you wish.

Have you not yet made it to Savannah?

We were in Savannah and had a fantastic time. Didn’t bring our bikes, and since the temperature was up to 97 (in mid-September), that was a good thing. (We’re not THAT hard core!) We loved our stay at the Savannah Beach Inn on Tybee Island. Another high point was Jonathan Stalcup’s architectural walking tour of the city ( www.architecturalsavannah.com ) despite the heat.

Since you were in Savannah, why don’t you check it off as a place where you’ve been?

Y’all come back, ya hear?

You’re right, of course! We did go there for our honeymoon, and loved it. Great food, and a great place to go shopping for artwork, because of Savannah College of Art. We didn’t get on bikes but we did manage a little horseback ride. And we will definitely be back. Thanks for the reminder about checking Savannah off. Now I need to come up with some more places we want to go!
