Depends on your cup of tea… what do you like doing? Clubbing? Concerts? Going along with the crowds in the streets? The options are many, as in any big city.
When the time gets close, you may want to check the events scheduled for NYE on Wanted In Rome, which is the bible for expats here.

Thanks so much for responding and giving me a link to the ‘bible’!
I think following the crowds will probably be what we end up doing.. but any recommendations for clubs, just in case (because, who doesn’t like to dance on new years eve?)?

I was there for Christmas and New Years in 1996-97. It was a lot of fun for me. Like Paola says, it depends on what you want to do – we mostly just wandered the streets from cafe to cafe, not to mention the gelateria and the pastry shops.

Thanks!
So you found that everything was open late? And how was the weather during that time? I’ve read it doesn’t get that cold there, which is promising considering Canada’s weather.

I spent 2003 and 2004 in Rome for New Year’s. We had a blast. You will probably end up doing what the rest of the city does. Everyone meets up at the Spanish Steps and (I would definitely suggest getting a spot at the very top) watching fireworks and drinking and watching the crowds. It was a lot of fun. Definitely grab something to eat earlier in the evening at a small cafe or even grocery store. It is very hard to find a restaraunt in the city that isnt serving a 150 euro dinner with 10 courses on New Year’s Eve.

Be careful.. I went there for New Years 2005 and came back engaged! Who’d a thunk? But yeah, it is a great place to ring in the new year. We went to Piazza Del Popolo where they had music and alot of other entertainment. They had the countdown followed by beautiful fireworks. We then went up the Spanish Steps and watched the celebration from above. Memorable in so many ways. Enjoy!

Congrats! Haha, unless a random Italian man asks me, that won’t be a problem.. although I think I would be apt to say yes, just because of the romantic atmosphere…
Thanks for responding!

Don’t be too surprised if it happens! They are quite friendly there and even more so once the New Years vino starts flowing. Have a great time!
