A question about this place:
Hello everyone! I will be working for an NGO in bombay starting later this month. i will be living in a place called sion koliwada (near Shanmukhananda hall). I was wondering what kind of place this is. Is it nice? Close to public transp.?

Answers:

Well, Sion-Koliwada used to be a place populated by:

1. The kolis (fishermen) initially)
2. Madrasis (Tamilians, and other south Indians like me)
3. Gujjus (who seem to have taken over 80% of Mumbai. Aamra Amdavad nantar Aaamra Mumbai… you know…

Shanmukhananda is a a heritage on the Mumbai landscape. That is exactly where Prof. Stephen Hawking delivered his lecture when he was in India. A li’l dirty if you are accustomed to living in clean and Green spaces, but a good place overall.

Hope you enjoy your stay in Mumbai!!

Cheers!
Shrikant.

Hi. Welcome to Mumbai. Sion is in central Mumbai. It’s the northern boundary of Greater Mumbai, and northwards are the suburbs. How does it matter to you? Well, auto rickshaws don’t ply in Greater Mumbai. So while you could take rickshaws to go northwards from Sion, say, to Ghatkopar, or Mulund, or Bandra, you will have to use Taxis to go south wards towards Dadar, Mumbai central, Fort.

Taxis seat 4 people max and charge 13 rupees a mile (1.6km)
Autorickshaws seat 3 people max and charge 9 rupees a mile (1.6km)

Your place is very close to the eastern express highway and you will find enough BEST buses to take you up, down, right and left.

Besides, its a cozy residential area, not too far away from noise. The GTB station and the Sion station are the closest railway stations. You will use them frequently.

(for some weird reason wikimapia ain’t working at this moment, or i’d have sent you the link to where your place is)

Have a nice time.
