A question about this place:
I'd love to go see a ballet production like Swan Lake or The Nutcracker Suite. Any ideas when I should go for this?

Whenever the “Bolshoy” opens. I think it’s gonna be in a year or two. You can always go to St. Petersburg and visit the Mariinsky theater. http://www.mariinsky.ru/

Not sure what is wrong with Bolshoi. Their website has shows scheduled from now and into January. I am not in Moscow and cannot verify that Bolshoi is physically open, but that would be quite a scam if they were selling tickets online to a closed theater.

Are you trying to time a trip to Moscow to a ballet performance? November is not the best time to see Moscow. The next two performances of Swan Lake, according to the Bolshoi website http://bolshoi.ru/en/ are November 23 and 30. There are six performances of Nutckracker in December (including two matinees) and five more in January. Dec-Jan could be fun with all the New Year and Christmas festivities (Jan 7), with any luck it will be snowy, but not opressively cold.

However, Moscow was meant to be visited in May or early September.

Yes I totally agree with going to the Bolshoi’s new stage Maly Theatre, but get your tickets really early. I saw a production in June on the new stage and it was great. There is also a ballet company in the Kremlin, and I was talking to some people who went there and really enjoyed it…. I’m an actor and I was there studying theatre, and there is so much great theatre there…. I would definately check out the Satericon theatre… Richard the III, or Macbet… they are in Russian but so well done that you understand anyways…. hope this helps!

Referring to your question about the best time for visiting Moscow to get an impact on russian winter – what do you have to do:

1) If u want to make a cognition of winter & other natural phenomenons, it’s better to do it in 20-29 of February – the breathtakingly shocking frost goes this time (special climatical axiom in Russsia, called Kreschenskyie morozy – i.e. Christening Frosts) – it could breakdown to -35 grades below zero (Celsius, 0 grades is the point of H2O freezing). I can guarantee tons of snow, icy wind, etc.. If to take it for real, it would be best to do it out of Moscow – as it’s city you’ll never see the real authentic virgin winter – the real winter is outside, 100 kilos from Moscow u can see it more lucidly.

2) If you want to get some impressions on “what is Russia?” in accordance to some stereotypes on it (i.e. vodka, medved, balalaika & other shitty ideas that are used by most of idiots to express the crescent russian topic, which has nothing with reality – like someone thinks that America is Liberty Statue or Mexico = tequila or GB = lemons, St’Pauls Cathedral & bobbies) you it doesn’t matter in what month to go in winter – from Nov to Feb all will suit/

To your questions on Swan Sea or tra-la-la..
The best way is to wait for their ballet tour to Europe, because the troop for foreign stages is gathered better, than for domestic perfomance. When they go abroad from Russia the dancers are stronger, the show is more complete etc. You’ll be surprized, but in foreign trips they try to make things much better – because they are more interested in showing the full perfomance outside, than on domestic market. This is ugly face of russian being – all buisinesses are thinking much more not about their constant consumers who cannot give big earnings, but about impermanent consumers who can pay much more. To serve for your people isn’t popular in Russia..They’ll shake their feet in desire to do the best for alien, than for a brother.

Don’t think I’m completely pessimistic bastard – I’m very happy at all, it’s just the truthy things for you instead of official delicate sayings.
