Glasgow, Scotland

TheRose asks,

“I'm going to Glasgow from London in December to watch a concert at the SECC. What sort of areas should I stay, any nice places nearby? I was looking at a hotel near the Botanical Gardens/Kelvinbridge. Is that lively, with bars, etc? Cheers.”

Yes, it is lively. It’s right beside Glasgow University (4th oldest in Europe?) so there’s a lot of stuff there. I think it’s also reasonably safe. The Botanical Gardens are lovely in late May, no idea about December though. I found Glasgow to be a going-out-with-chums kind of city, though, because when I went out alone I felt more conspicuous (and got a lot more stared at, but that was probably just the guy who bought me a drink and made me feel like an exotic martian) than in Dublin and London and Copenhagen.

yeah thats a lovely area, its just about the same price as city centre… i think?

you’re right next to Byres Rd and Great Western Rd, both are really handy for transport… shopping… reasturants and Byres Rd is great for little bars

hope you have a great trip!!

that’s a pretty decent area, just a quick walk to Ashton Lane where you can visit several fun bars. I prefer Brel’s to the Ubiquitous Chip, but you might enjoy both.

you should be able to walk and take the underground to the SECC, but if you decide to take a black cab it will only cost about a fiver.

Enjoy!

Thanks everyone, I’m happier with the choice now. The hotel is near Great Western Road and pretty cheap too – well around £55 for a double room per night. Can’t wait to get there!
