A question about this place:
Im going to Nassau in mid-November. I got a pretty sweet deal on flights and hotel. My friends I was going with flaked out, so it looks likes I'll be going solo. I can't really change my destination at this point. Any advice on traveling alone in The Baha

Sorry but I have never traveled there alone, so I really can’t say. In general Nassau is pretty safe, so if you take the same precautions as a solo traveler anywhere you should be all right.

Namsil,
I apologize, but somehow, I couldn’t answer you directly because I don’t have no smackers! whatever that is; you guys over this thing, make it easier for a sister to reply and stuff; makes folks think you don’t want to help them. anyhow. I went with a cruise and did my walking around Nassau; I suggest you do the same; They do use American money; If you can check out the Straw Market and hire a taxi and see more of the island; The shops are accomodating and I felt pretty safe there; however, I suggest if you take money, a friend of mine suggested a fanny pack;(but if your me, pin it inside of you). Check out the conch fish they have there it is truly GOOD; fried plaintain and rice and peas is great too; And check out some postcards; If you can, I’d love to get some more postcards and am willing to pay. Get back with me if you can(thesavvybamalady@yahoo.com) and we’ll get something going. Hope to speak to you soon.

I agree with sybercat, just got back from the Bahamas. Naussa is the capital. We stayed at Cable beach at Breezes. We really enjoyed it. I took the buses everywhere…$1. Very safe. Locals were very nice. My daughter and I went all over on the bus. Mostly during the day. We stuck to the discos and entertainment at our all inclusive resort at night. If were you are staying doesnt have a lot to do, you can buy passes to visit other resorts. Nassau the town is kind of touristy. Senor Frogs and Club Fluid are night time hot spots, my 17 year old got invites but I wouldn’t let her go with strangers. We took the “Booze and Cruise” which was alot of fun and took a tour of Atlantis, which was worthwhile. Also visited the zoo and gardens Ardastra . Great seafood and mangos and pineapple. Especially the Conch.

I went on a cruise-so for me it was a port of call for a day. I went alone on the cruise-but they matched me up with 2 ladies to share a cabin. I stayed with the group-but did not go alone on things. You might see if whoever gave you the deal on flight and hotel can match you up with other solo vacationers like yourself.
See if your flight and/or hotel can match you up with others so you won’t be alone that much. Avoid excursions in a van-they may overfill bus/vans so it becomes a fire trap. Walking, taking a taxi-should be OK be sure they don’t over-fill the vehicles. Try an excursion on a half-submarine boat because they give a good view of underwater life. Use lots of sunblock, stay hydrated-it’s very easy to get sunburned. Avoid rum punch boat rides-the punch is cheap and makes people sick.In case of sunburn take lots of aloe vera gel-and be ready to go to first aid if you get a very bad sunburn.(I got red, burnt, and peely.)
Take lots of pictures-the water is so clear and pretty there. In case you need medical care-be sure you have travel insurance should you need immediate medical care while there.
I went in July.

I agree with those before me. It’s very good advice and you should take it all in.

I’ve been to the Bahamas twice via a cruise. I was with my cousin. She and I had a great time there. And we felt safe walking at night before we had to get back on the ship.

I recommend the straw market for shopping. And there’s tons of local cuisine that you can try. Conch fritters are a must. And most place make the drinks nice and strong.

Just like anywhere else you would travel be sure to just keep an eye open and watch your back. Don’t be too flashy because it draws attention.

There are tons of things to do. We took a boat to a secluded little island and went snorkeling. If you’ve never gone snorkeling, I recommend it. It’s amazing to see the life underneath and the brilliant colors. It was my first time doing it and it was great. They also had where you could swim with stingrays and a beach that served food and drinks.

There’s also a place with a long all stair walkway and a jail where they used to torture prisoners. This is part of the Bahimian history.

You should be able to get all this information and from AAA, if you’re a member, or by researching Nassau on line.

The people were all very nice and friendly.

Just remember to keep it safe and have fun!

i think it’ll be a lot of fun anyway. nothing can ruin the bahamas. the straw market can get a little crazy and claustrophobic tho. i took a cruise to the bahamas with my church and even tho i was with a bunch of old ppl i still had a lot of fun:) it was one of the best trips i ever had. have fun.
