Well missy….it kinda depends on what you are in to and how adventurous you are. There are so many options that it is hard to really narrow it down. You have alot of the preppi sports bars up in Wriglyville, and the college bars in Lincoln Park, then there are the clubs in the gold coast, and thousands of little places splashed in between.

Do you like Jazz, Blues, Rock, Techno, Rap, Indi-Music? Are you Artsy, Preppy, A Club Chick, or just in the mood for a good time?

It’s been a long time since I was up in Chicago, but I have to agree with JP. Chicago has something for everyone if you like cities.

I’ve become less and less of one lately, and I’m in Carbondale, IL now, a college town several hours south along the famed City of New Orleans rail line.

Don’t take what you see in movies as a good representation of any place, since they’re only going to use the places that advance the story and ignore the 99.44% of the city that doesn’t. By the way, which movie was it?

Get a hold of a copy of The Reader, and use that as your guide to Chicago’s cultural events and night life.

Is Medusa’s or Neo’s on Clark still in the biz? Medusa’s might be the goth club off of Belmont El Stop, I’m a bit hazy on that. There was a club too, on the south side of Belmont not far w. of the El stop, where men danced.

I recall some jazz clubs, Bull’s on Halstead, and some others on Halstead too.

There’s a Polish cabaret somewhere in the area of the West side.

Make sure you’re in good company. To get to some of these places you may have to come close to or cross gang territory. Go in packs, or at least in twos, and carry a large can of mace, and be ready to use it.

My favorite way to find out whats going on locally (and in the suburbs) is to use Metromix.com. It covers just about every bar, club, and event for any kind of mood and their reviews are mostly dead on. The nightlife in Chicago is unlike any other city because so many ethnicities are represented (and loved) here. The key to having fun in Chicago is to be willing to take a risk on a place you don’t know and to have some cash for cover charges! And, um, as for safety tips for avoiding gangs and vagrants, well, its not that big of a problem unless you look for it. Chicagoans have a space rule: you stay out of mine and I will stay out of yours (because you just might be crazier than me). Have fun!
