A question about this place:
Just wondering about a good place to stay in Skye. We are backpackers so take busses, trains etc. Any suggestions? Thanks!

We stayed in a B&B in Portree. Don’t remember the name – it’s been > 10years. B&B should be fine (everywhere in Scotland btw)

Dun Flodigarry Hostel is good and in a stunning location. Stock up on food in Portree beforehand though as there is not much at the hostel apart from the pub next door.

You should try
www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk, it’s a good site for last minute deals on accommodation & has good general information for anyone travelling in Scotland. I stayed in Portree. There were plenty of B & B’s around. If you’re flying to Glasgow or Edinburgh, you could take a coach to Skye, see www.spt.co.uk/buchananbusstation/index.html or
www.citylink.co.uk. Skye is absolutely stunning, no wonder they call it the ‘island of mist’ – I turned to get my camera but by the time I looked round, the scene had changed completely.

When I was on Skye, I was there for a fiddle school at Sabhal Mor Ostaig. The place is a gaelic college and cultural center. It is also in a very picturesque part of Skye and very well connected for travellers. See their website:

You will find that they have very good information about local accommodations and transportation to their facility. The info they provide is almost unavailable anywhere else. If you e-mail them, you may find that you can rent accommodations from them directly. They also have a field out back where you may pitch a tent (I did) and I am sure they would let you use their showers. You can certainly buy meals from their kitchen.

Good luck in your travels

I took the train from Inverness to Kyle Lochash which is just on the mainland side of the bridge that connects to Skye. It was a beautiful ride and I did it solo having no idea what I was doing or what I was getting myself into and I have no complaints at all.

I stay at a hostel right on the east side of Skye in Kyleakin (http://www.travelscotland.co.uk/hostels/skye-backpackers.htm) which is the 1st village just over the bridge. I didn’t get to explore much more of the island because my time was limited.

The hostel was great and I met a lot of really great people. We went to Sassy Marys (http://www.btinternet.com/kyleakin/business/saucymary.htm) there in the town as well and had a great time.

Enjoy! I miss it so.

I took the train from Glasgow to Mallaig and then a little ferry over to Skye. Then I caught a bus up to Portree and stayed in a nice little B&B in Portree, can’t remember the name, but the Tourist Information office in town found it for me, and it was only about 2 blocks walk from the main downtown area. Portree worked out nicely as a base town for seeing Skye, and the town is nice, with several shops, pubs, and restaurants, and some very nice views.

The bus service on Skye is somewhat limited, but worked fine for me, I was able to easily catch a bus up from Mallaig to Portree, I had a two hour wait for the bus to Portree in Sligichan but it was perfect for a pint and some lunch in the pub.
When I wanted to tour the northern portion of the island there was a bus that went up there also, so even though the bus service may only have one or two runs per day, it was easy enough to coordinate my hiking plans with the bus schedule.

You can find many tour services to Skye in Edinburgh, some of them are very suitable for backpackers, which offer hop-on-hop-off buses and help you to book very nice hostels.

Portree is full of bed and breakfasts. I imaging Broadford has a few bed and breakfasts as well. We stayed in Fiskavaig and there was the Skyewalker Hostel on the road there just at the turn off from Portnalong. There’s also a good one in Kyleakin. Buses on Skye are quite good.

We stayed at a great B & B near Kyleakin but noticed that there were several hostels also available on the Ilse of Skye. Here’a another link you can check out

We travelled by bus & train as well; crossing the bridge then renting a car in Portree for a couple of days then leaving by the ferry and travelling by train again.
Awesome scenery & great people, a place we’ll definitely return to!!

Hope you enjoy your visit there !!
