It is not. Temperatures around here in August are between 20º and 30º Celsius (that is between 68º and 86º Fahrenheit). Take into account that the first fortnight is hotter than the last one. It is also important to remember that near the coast we enjoy athlantic climate whereas the heart of Galicia (Orense, for example) is more continental. Despite this, the variety of landscapes creates microclimates; for example the “Canyon of the Sil” which draws the”Ribeira Sacra”, has mediterranean weather. Nevertheless a few miles down the south, the mountains of Orense get a weather that is not that different from the Apalaches.

Thankyou very much Pecas, for your full answer. We’re intending to visit the Canyon de Sil in the second half of August, driving from Oviedo Airport taking over a week altogether, but hoping to visit the Galician coast as well perhaps. I’ll have to look up what ‘Ribeira Sacra’ means . Cheers

Santiago De Compostellas
“Ribeira Sacra” is galician (we speak a different language, as you might know, but don’t panic, everybody speaks Spanish and galician people are known wordlwide for their hospitality) for “Sacred Riverside” because the Canyon del Sil (Sil is the name of the river) has scattered monasteries and abbeys dating from the Xth Century onwards. It was supposed to be a quiet, secluded place of prayer; for example “San Pedro de Rocas”(IXth century), something like “St. Peter of the Stones” because its church is carved into the sheer stone.
I hope you enjoy your journey. Oviedo is not far but you have to expect at least five hours of driving before arriving to Ourense. It’s a good idea to stop near Ribadeo, look for a place in the map called “Praia das Catedrais” or “Cathedral beach”. The sea has carved the cliffs as you can see in this picture and its a great place where to stretch your legs. Just make sure the tide is low or the see will cover most of the arches.
