New York State, United States

Sophie asks,

“I am finally going!! I have booked my ticket for December and I am taking my son with me who will be 8 months old. Does anyone know the law on car seats over there? Do you think he will be able to sit on my knee in the back of a taxi? Cheeers :)”

Car seats are legally required in most States – New York included. But I am not sure how that applies to taxis. I would imagine the driver will tell you – and in that case – your son on your knee probably won’t be an issue.

According to NYS Child Passenger Restraint Law, Taxis and other modes of public transportation are exempt.

However, if you plan to rent a car, or ride in a vehicle of a family member/friend/etc obviously the law will apply.

Not sure about child seat laws but cabbies will probably not have a problem with it as long as you can pay your fare. The only thing they are careful about is putting too many people in the cab cause they will get a ticket.

Have a great time!

(This law pertains to riding in cabs, also.)

New Child Booster Seat Laws

We’ve been getting a lot of calls into the Your Stories line about the new child booster seat laws that go into effect March 27th. There is some confusing information out there.

Here are the new rules once again, just to clear up any questions you might have. The new law says until a child reaches their 7th birthday, or becomes 4’9’’, they must ride in a booster seat. Once a child hits either of those requirements they don’t have to ride in a booster seat.

In the last 20 years, more than 7,000 lives were saved by using child safety seats. The new law takes effect March 27th.

Haha :) No, you don’t need a carseat in a taxi. That would be pretty funny, wouldn’t it? All these parents without cars in New York who take taxis, carrying their babies and toddlers around…and their carseats… :) Yeah, if you get a rental car, you need one. But not for a taxi.

Most likely the driver won’t say anything but just in case I think you should put your son in a safety seat. You can never be too careful. Have fun in NY!!!
