It depends. If your criteria are steeps and backcountry/off piste Chamonix has the best skiing in the world. Grand Montets (one of the four areas in the Valley) has huge amounts of lift served off piste, with access to glaciers & chutes. One of the great skiing objectives is the Vallee Blanche, an awsome descent with 3000m of vertical down the back of Mt Blanc through Alpine terrain complete with crevasses. See my flickr pics here:

The town is the beating heart of the Mountaineering & Extreme skiing world, with parties to match.
What Chamonix is not though is a groomed and polished resort in the spirit of Vail or Val d’isere. The four areas are not linked by lifts, the beginners slopes are limited and in some cases (like at Brevant) have 1000m drop offs at the bottom of them. It is a serious and committing place.
Chamonix rocks. If your skiing is as good as you say it is and you want to push yourself you will have the time of your life and never look back. Just don’t think it is going to be relaxing!

I would say it’s just right- there are some excellent slopes. I wrote an entry, I think under ‘Les Houches’ about 1 of my skiing experiences there- It’s a rather amusing entry!
I’m so jealous, I wish I was going back soon. It really is absolutely beautiful. I met a lot of good people there too.
HAVE FUN!!!

I’ve an apartment in Argentiere Greg and ski there every year. If your an upper intermediate, it’ll be right up your street. Grand Montets ski area will keep you more than happy for a week on piste or off – then you can always move over to Flegere and Brevent. Get a guide and do some ski touring over into Switzerland or head on down the Vallee Blanche – these will all be within your ability. But you must take it head on – it’ll scare the crap out of you if you get it right – that’s the memorable part! Good luck.
