Metro Richmond Zoo

I’d heard criticisms of this zoo, but after a friend went last spring and I saw her photos, and especially after I’ve been to zoos in Philadelphia and Atlanta this year, I decided it was time for me to see the zoo that is less than an hour’s drive from my house.

I was surprised at the variety of animals at the zoo. I was a little disappointed at some of the habitats; except for the penguins (who had a fountain) and the bats (who had a nocturnal exhibit), all of the animals looked like they were living strictly in a Virginia habitat, which I imagine would be difficult for some of them to adapt to. Also, some of the animal displays were not even marked to show what animal they were!

However, considering its location, I would not mind going back.

I keep hearing that it’s overrated, and that if you’ve ever been to a “real” zoo, you’ll be disappointed, but considering I’ve been to both the Philadelphia Zoo and Zoo Atlanta this year alone, it seems like I should see the one zoo within an hour of my house.
