Second Beach

Well, my parents and I lived very close to Second Beach, just off Denman, so I spent many days swimming in the pool here.

As well, this was my first real job. I worked in the concession stand when I was 14, earning money so I could go on an exchange to Germany.

I learned how to work very hard—peeling potatoes, chipping fries, battering fish…and then the boiling oil to make it all. I still have the scars on my arms from oil splatters: we were supposed to wear long sleeves all the time, but in that little space, with the sun beating down, and a line up of (literally) hundreds of people outside, it was way too hot.

I’m forever addicted to malt vinegar and fries with the skin on because of this place.
