By far the fastest and easiest way to move around the city! Even as a tourist it wasn’t too bad to find my way around, and contrary to stereotype, plenty of locals were willing to help me work the map :)

If you’re going for more than a day or two, it’s definitely worth it to buy a 7-day metro pass, you’ll end up saving ALOT of money on subway tickets in the end and don’t have to keep working the ticket machine.

The subway is one of the fantastic things about new york. You get places really fast and things rarely go wrong.

The worst was when some guy yelled out ‘false alarm’ as the train was stopped at the station with the doors open, and all these people jumped up, and I panicked and jumped up and off the train, then realised he’d said ‘false alarm’ just as the train was pulling away. oops!

I love the subway. At first, it was just an obvious, cheap way to get around, but after a few years, when my friends from college started to move to cities where they had to buy their first car and sit through rush hour traffic, I realised how blessed we are in the New York area that we have a complete, working subway system. Tourists and new transplants are still going to hate it and be confused by it, especially if they only take it at rush hour, but I love that I don’t have to have a car and can still get anywhere I’d want to go for two bucks. Can you imagine if all those people sitting next to you on the train had to commute by car? We’d be so smoggy, not to mention the parking problem.

I prefer to walk as much as I can, but I’m really grateful that someone a hundred years ago figured this one out…
