I visited them twice. Each time I traveled through the whole Iza Valley on foot (about 52km). It took about a week from Săpânţa (seen The Happy Cemetery there) to Borşa (and climbed the Rodna Mountains from there). On the second visit we skipped Săpânţa and we also visited Ieud, which we skipped the first time. We found there the oldest wooden church still standing (most are rebuilt after the turkish invasions when they were burned down). Also on the second trip, we found that there are a lot of churches to see outside the Iza valley, and we plan to see them, since the Iza valley lost it’s charm since most of the young people there started working in other countries (mostly Italy and Spain) and use the money earned to build large, ugly (kitsch) villas. So the whole valley is now a large constructions site.
