The last time I went to this place

So about three months ago, they expanded their menu. They now have a selection of burgers, they added more sandwiches and appetizers, and they have more entrees as well.

I had an Armadillo burger, which is made from fresh ground sirloin and topped off with Goode’s BBQ sauce, sauteed mushrooms and onions, Swiss cheese, and bacon. Delicious.

Other recent additions: wings, an assortment of salads, a club sandwich, a chicken salad sandwich, fried chicken, and a venison chili Frito pie.

But they’ve gotten rid of the queso flameado – tragedy! – and I realized today that of the four times I’ve been to the Palace, I’ve had bad service three times.

Despite being the only table today, we had to wait twenty minutes for sweetener once we got our iced tea, another fifteen minutes to get our order in, our tea glasses went empty twice, and when the food came it wasn’t what we ordered.

The service here is consistently poor. I think there’s a deeper management issue at this place and it’s a damn shame because the food is amazing.

Why I recommend this place to locals

Yet another great restaurant by Houston legend Jim Goode. It isn’t hard to miss – just look for the giant armadillo on Kirby.

This is a great place to hang out. They have a bar, shuffleboard, pool tables, and live music. They also usually have sports on the plasma TVs. There are some nice seats on the patio, too.

The place has a pretty small menu, but everything on it is amazing. They have a great chicken fried steak – it comes with a loaded baked potato and Texas toast. If you’re into spicy stuff, try the Peace Maker, which is basically a cold prime rib sandwich with horseradish sauce. The smoked chicken flautas have a bit of a kick, too. The portion sizes are huge, so show up ready to eat.
