The Dickerson Park Zoo keeps it’s animals devided be what continent they are native to. This is good news if you what to see animals from Africa and Australia, but bad if you’re looking for creatures from Asia or North America. The elephants and tigers are at the far left corner of the zoo, but they’re usually worth the walk.
If you’re jonesing to see animals native to Missouri, I suggest you breath through your mouth when you finally get up the hill to their exhibits – because those foxes smell worse than roadkill.
The pond near the train station has some machines that you can buy animal feed from, for the waterfowl or the turtles. If you feed them in the morning, you can usually get a pretty diverse set of animals to come close to you.
If you are going to feed the giraffes, watch for times when there are many gathered around the viewing area. Usually you can feed the old male, he never leaves – just in case there is any more food to go around. Don’t bother trying to pet or touch them, they won’t let you even when they’re eating out of your hand.
