This is the best free attraction in New York that I’ve been to so far. Unlike New York museums that are free one night a week, the Onassis Cultural Center is always free, so at least when I went, there wasn’t a big crowd. I don’t think there ever would be, because I think it’s relatively unknown. Even I didn’t know about it until last year, and it’s been open since 2000.
They have temporary exhibitions, and I just saw Worshiping Women: Ritual and Reality in Classical Athens, which was an impressive show of mostly painted vases and votive sculptures predominantly lent by the National Archeological Museum of Athens. I scanned the OCC website, and their past exhibitions looked good too. They also offer free lectures, literature readings, film, theater and music events.
