This is the only natural lake in all of Texas (and half of it sits in Louisiana). Most of this lake is pretty rough – take even a short canoe trip through the wetlands and you’ll see every type of wildlife you can imagine including very large alligators, egrets, eagles, etc. The photo I posted is of Potter’s point.
In the 1840’s there was a battle between two different “gangs” in the Texas badlands (along the US border). The gangs were the Regulators and Moderators. The leader of the Moderators was a man named Robert Potter (also a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence, one of the first Texas senators, and the only Secretary of the Texas Navy). One night, the rival Regulators tracked him down to his home at Caddo Lake. To avoid being shot, he ran to the edge of the lake and leapt in as his wife watched. He was shot in the head as he swam away.
Caddo Lake is an amazing place to see – both in terms of Texas history, Native American history (it’s the home of the Caddo Indians), and wildlife. An amazing place that is worth visiting – plenty of b/b’s in nearby Marshall, including some really amazing turn of the century hotels. Also, some great camping in the state park along the lake.
