Altun-ha

I love history, so I was beyond excited to be able to go see the ruins of Altun-Ha. It was even my birthday that day!

We had an excellent tour guide who not only told us all about the ruins, but about Belize as a whole. Since this was the first time I’d ever really visited a place that I can consider ‘ancient’, it was pretty significant to me. It was jolting putting my hands on the crumbling rocks and thinking that a long, long time ago someone else was probably touching that same rock on an equally hot and muggy day.

Beautiful, i only wish i had gotten to enjoy it more…

The bus ride there was 2 hours long, most of it unnecessary driving around Belize City, with our tour guide squawking in my ear the whole trip, so by the time we got to the site i had a splitting headache and was dehydrated and sweaty. xD

But it was amazing. We were lead around the site while the lady told us about the ceremonies that were held there and such. At the end of the tour we all got to climb the highest pyramid/mound there, which is where this picture is taken. [As you can see, neither of us were in the best of spirits at the time ^^;]

Afterwards we were given very limited time to absorb everything we had just seen and get shuffled back onto the bus for the ride back. i suppose the moral of the story is, if you’re taking a tour bus to the ruins of Altun Ha from a Belize port, don’t sit in the back of the bus by the speakers and be sure to bring water and sunglasses… and a camera. :D
