Alexanderplatz

This is my favourite area in Berlin. Whenever I visit Berlin I always make sure I book into a hotel near Alexanderplatz so I am never too far from the action!

I particularly love the historic buildings that can be found here. The traditional seat of city government, the Rotes Rathaus, or Red City Hall, are all located on or around the square. A history buff’s dream!

I came here mainly to look at and go up the TV tower (Fernsehturm). The area is currently in the throes of being redeveloped – it will be interesting to come back in a few years time and see it transformed from its current austere look to something much more modern. But I do hope that the TV tower will still be there. It reminds me of the Space Needle in Seattle – built with a futuristic look, and still distinctive many years later.

It’s also a major transport hub, with many S and U-Bahn lines interchanging here.
