Worth visiting!
spinning with dolphins
I went swimming with the adorable hector’s dolphin in and just outside of the harbor. At one point I was twising in circles with 2 dolphins spinning around me. It was beyond fun and amazing for wild animals to be so playfully interested in humans.

Why I recommend this place to visitors
I rented a kayak, and while paddling in the bay, three dolphins came a swam along beside us. It was amazing.

Spend a day in Christchurch and then head out to Akaroa.

A review of this place: What Akaroa is like
Akaroa is about an hour and a half’s drive from Christchurch. It is a small seaside town with craft shops and nice restaurants. It has a French background, as early immigrants from France settled there. It is a good place to go for a weekend or a dat trip.

Akaroa is a village on Banks Peninsula in the Canterbury region of the South Island of New Zealand. It is 82 kilometres by road from Christchurch, and is the terminus of State Highway 75.

There's a rather off-putting, winding hill road between Christchurch and Akaroa -- but the scenery is wonderful and you shouldn't let a few steep twists and turns deter you from visiting this little French-inspired whimsy on the shores of Akaroa Harbour. From the time you reach the breathtaking setting of the Hilltop Café & Bar (tel. 03/325-1005 ), a country pub worth a visit, overlooking Akaroa and the harbor, you'll be seduced by this dramatic volcanic landscape. Jean Langlois, an early French explorer, took word of it back to France, and in 1840, two ships and a handful of settlers arrived to colonize the site. They were too late -- the British had beaten them to it when they signed the Treaty of Waitangi the year before. The French abandoned their plan, but the settlers stayed on, casting about names such as Le Bons Bay, Duvauchelle, and French Farm. Today, you'll still find "rues" here, not streets.
