Worth visiting!
Look out for the peacocks!
Kawau Island is about 50km north of Auckland. There is a colonial mansion-style house by the waterfront which was built by a former Governor of New Zealand. Peacocks roam the grounds and will come right up to you! There are also weka (brown birds which I originally thought were peahens), which are only found in NZ.
There are various walking trails, one of which leads to the old copper mine (I didn’t get that far!).

Why I want to go to this place
Kawau Island is an island in the Upper Hauraki Gulf north of Auckland. I want to go there because I grew up in Auckland and never went. Now I live even closer, having moved north, so there’s no excuse for not visiting. It’s supposed to be a get-away-from-it-all tranquil place. We’re not talking tropical island like Fiji etc, but lots of trees and walks, good fishing – a good day-trip if you want to get out of Auckland City.
