If you like industrial history, this is an amazing place. The iron bridge is remarkable if you think about the time it was built. I also enjoyed the Coalbrookdale foundry which is only partially open for touring. The highlight there is the Old Forge which is well preserved.
The size of the gorge is much smaller than I expected. It is worth the trip to walk along the roads (one lane paths, really) that run along the bottom of the gorge.
Drive up the Severn Valley from Bristol if you have the time – very scenic. Telford is nothing to write home about.
