Bay Bridge aka: San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge

My least favorite bridge in the entire bay area.

bummer. When I drove across is was too foggy to see. I was mad because I wanted to see treasure island!

It was spring of 1983, and I remember being afraid that there was going to be an earthquake while our bus was traversing the span.

Whenever I drive across the Bay Bridge, I cannot help but think back to the ‘89 earthquake and it just makes me drive through as quickly as possible! Mentally, not actually putting people in danger. It’s a rush. I also like the humming of the vehicles driving on the bridge’s pavement. Let your body start moving to that groove and enjoy the scenery.

It’s under construction at the moment (June 2006)—they are replacing the eastern span of the bridge. If you can avoid driving over it this summer, by all means, do so!

There are better ways to cross the bay right now: check out BART and the Ferry.

On the other hand, it’s definitely worth looking at—the Golden Gate Bridge gets all the press, but the Bay Bridge has its own kind of beauty.
